Employment Information

Facility Overview

Shepherd's Door, a program of the Portland Rescue Mission, is a supportive environment designed for women and children affected by homelessness and addiction. This expansive facility accommodates both adults and children, providing a nurturing space for growth and transformation.

Role Responsibilities

The Children's Center Assistant will collaborate with the Children's Center Teachers to establish a nurturing, educational atmosphere for up to 25 children (ages birth to 10). This role will focus on enhancing social, language, and motor skills that may be hindered by environmental factors. Utilizing trauma-informed practices, the assistant will engage with mothers, children, volunteers, and community resources to promote educational, emotional, and spiritual development.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Ensuring children feel loved and cared for while their mothers participate in programs.
  • Supporting Lead Teachers in prioritizing children’s needs and curriculum implementation.
  • Meeting children's basic needs, including diapering, feeding, and engaging in activities that foster trust and healing.
  • Fostering a collaborative environment among staff and volunteers, ensuring everyone feels valued.
  • Providing encouragement and guidance to mothers and children, facilitating their transition to healthier communities.
  • Modeling Christ-centered parenting practices to mothers, especially those with challenging backgrounds.
  • Sharing the Gospel through age-appropriate lessons and activities.
  • Creating a joyful and engaging atmosphere that promotes healthy family interactions.
  • Maintaining a well-organized and vibrant classroom and playground.
  • Taking responsibility for various aspects of the Children's Center.
