Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Japanese Library Specialist to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for acquiring and describing Japanese language materials for the Penn Libraries, working closely with the Japanese Studies Librarian to identify priorities for resource processing. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and organized individual to contribute to the growth and development of the Penn Libraries.
Responsibilities- Perform routine and complex copy cataloging of Japanese and Korean language materials, creating original bibliographic records as needed.
- Order, receive, and invoice Japanese and Korean language materials, including direct communication with vendors.
- Conduct routine and advanced searches of Penn Libraries catalogs, external bibliographic utilities, and online marketplaces for bibliographic and acquisitions information.
- Process physical inventory, including unboxing materials, barcoding library items, and transporting book trucks through Penn Libraries spaces.
- Solve routine and highly complex bibliographic and acquisitions problems involving Japanese and Korean materials, providing language expertise to other Penn Libraries staff as needed.
- Train and supervise student assistants, reviewing their work as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Strong knowledge, written and spoken, of the Japanese language.
- Ability to identify, analyze, and solve complex bibliographic and acquisitions problems with an eye for detail.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including the ability to interact with internal and external constituents such as Japanese-language vendors.
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of the Korean language.
- Experience in a library setting working with bibliographic data, preferably in cataloging monographs.
- Strong computer skills in a Windows computing environment, with experience manipulating spreadsheet data.
