Overview:
Responsible for executing a range of technical tasks to support the preparation and care of patients prior to surgery. Ensures patient skin is ready for surgical procedures following established hospital protocols. Upholds strict aseptic techniques and vigilantly observes for any potential breaches in these practices. Provides emotional support and comfort to patients awaiting surgery, demonstrating a commitment to patient care and confidentiality. Facilitates the transportation of patients to and from the Operating Room. Positions patients appropriately based on the surgical procedure being performed. Handles and preserves biological specimens with care. Prepares the Operating Room by organizing tables, instruments, and supplies tailored to the specific surgical case.


CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - Medical Center (CSRH-MC) is situated within the South Texas Medical Center, delivering exceptional care through compassionate service, experienced healthcare professionals, and cutting-edge technology, including the da Vinci Surgical Robot System and the MakoTM Robotic-Arm Assisted System.

The facility, with 178 beds, offers a variety of services such as Acute Care of the Elderly Unit, cardiology, diabetes management, emergency services, general surgery, kidney transplantation at the CHRISTUS Transplant Institute, orthopedics, outpatient rehabilitation, aquatic therapy, Senior Behavioral Health Center, urology, and the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Under the supervision of a registered nurse, executes all processes related to direct patient care and assistance in the Operating Room before and during surgical procedures.
  • Proficiently scrubs in three specialty areas, including but not limited to: Transplants, Open Heart, Urology, Neurology, Titanium Rib, Robotics, etc., is highly desirable.
  • Establishes and maintains a sterile environment, passing instruments and sutures to the surgeon, and assisting as directed.
  • Utilizes the physician preference card as a reference when preparing for surgical cases and setting up the Operating Room.
  • Ensures that preference cards are regularly updated and as comprehensive as possible.
  • Collaborates effectively as part of the team providing care to patients.
  • Participates in team planning and execution of surgical procedures.
  • Maintains a safe environment by consistently applying technical and aseptic practices.
  • Demonstrates clinical proficiency in the management and care of all surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Follows Universal Barrier Precautions to ensure safety for both patients and self in all care situations.
  • Exhibits competence in monitoring and controlling the surgical environment, ensuring proper traffic control, dress codes, and adherence to Operating Room sanitation policies.
  • Familiar with facility policies regarding decontamination, processing, and sterilization of all surgical instruments and supplies.
  • Shows capability to perform assigned patient care responsibilities that meet the specific needs of the patient population served by the department.
  • Appropriately adjusts patient assessment, treatment, and care methods to cater to the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each patient.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
Completion of a Surgical Technology program is required.
Preferred: 2 or more years of relevant experience.

BLS certification is required.

Certification as a Surgical Technologist from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting must be obtained within 180 days of graduation or possess an LVN/LPN License.
