Overview:

The Lead Surgical Technologist plays a crucial role in the surgical team by performing a range of technical responsibilities to assist in the preparation and care of patients prior to surgery. This includes preparing the patient's skin in line with established hospital protocols, ensuring strict adherence to aseptic techniques, and actively monitoring for any potential breaches in these protocols. The Lead Surgical Technologist also provides emotional support and comfort to patients, respecting their privacy and care needs. Responsibilities include transporting patients to and from the Operating Room and positioning them appropriately based on the surgical procedure. Additionally, this role involves identifying and managing biological specimens and preparing the Operating Room by organizing tables, instruments, and supplies according to the specific requirements of each case. A High School Diploma and CST certification are essential for this position.

Key Responsibilities:

- Uphold the standards of the OneCHRISTUS Competencies, including Leadership of Self, Others, or Leaders.
- Under the guidance of a registered nurse, execute all tasks related to direct patient care and assistance in the Operating Room before, during, and after surgical procedures.
- As the lead surgical technologist for a designated service line, provide leadership, education, guidance, and support to enhance operational efficiencies within that service.
- Responsibilities include preparation for patient care, understanding surgeon preferences, managing instrumentation, overseeing turnover times, and handling inventory.
- Collaborate daily with the RN Service Line Coordinator.
- Serve as a mentor and coach for new staff members.
- Demonstrate proficiency in scrubbing for at least three specialty areas, such as Transplants, Open Heart, Urology, Neurology, Titanium Rib, and Robotics, which is highly preferred.

Qualifications:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a surgical technologist in a hospital or surgical center is required.
  • 5 years of experience is preferred.
  • Experience as a Lead Tech or a proven history as a Surgical Technologist is preferred.
  • BLS certification is required.
  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting is mandatory.
