Overview:
Responsible for executing a range of technical tasks to assist in the preparation and care of patients prior to surgery. Ensures patient skin is prepped for surgical procedures in line with hospital protocols. Maintains strict aseptic techniques and vigilantly observes situations that may compromise these standards. Provides emotional support and comfort to patients awaiting surgery, demonstrating a commitment to patient privacy and care. Facilitates the transport of patients to and from the Operating Room. Positions patients appropriately based on the surgical procedure. Handles and preserves biological specimens. Prepares the Operating Room by organizing tables, instruments, and supplies tailored to the specific case.


CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - Medical Center (CSRH-MC) is situated within the South Texas Medical Center, delivering exceptional care through compassionate professionals, experienced physicians, and cutting-edge technology, including the da Vinci Surgical Robot System and the MakoTM Robotic-Arm Assisted System.

This 178-bed facility offers a wide array of services, including Acute Care of the Elderly Unit, cardiology, diabetes management, emergency services, general surgery, kidney transplantation at the CHRISTUS Transplant Institute, orthopedics, outpatient rehabilitation, aquatic therapy, Senior Behavioral Health Center, urology, and the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Meets the expectations outlined in the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • Under the supervision of a registered nurse, executes all processes related to direct patient care and assistance in the Operating Room before and during surgical procedures.
  • Proficiently scrubs in at least three specialty areas, including but not limited to: Transplants, Open Heart, Urology, Neurology, Titanium Rib, Robotics, etc., is highly preferred.
  • Establishes and upholds the sterile field, passes instruments and sutures to the surgeon, and assists as directed.
  • Utilizes the physician preference card as a reference when preparing cases and setting up the Operating Room.
  • Ensures that preference cards are consistently updated and comprehensive.
  • Collaborates effectively as part of the team caring for the patient.
  • Participates in team planning and execution.
  • Maintains a safe environment by consistently applying technical and aseptic practices.
  • Exhibits clinical expertise in the handling and care of all surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Adheres to Universal Barrier Precautions for both patient and personal safety in all patient care scenarios.
  • Demonstrates the ability to monitor and manage the surgical environment, ensuring proper traffic control, dress codes, and compliance with Operating Room sanitation policies and procedures.
  • Familiar with facility policies and procedures regarding decontamination, processing, and sterilization of all instruments and supplies used within the facility.
  • Demonstrates competence in performing assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the specific and developmental needs of the patient population served by the department.
  • Adapts patient assessment, treatment, and care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each patient.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Completion of a Surgical Technology program is required.
2 or more years of experience is preferred.

BLS certification is required.

Certification as a Surgical Technologist from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting must be obtained within 180 days of graduation or LVN/LPN License is required.
