Position Overview

Important Notice:
Please refrain from applying if you are not a current or former Law Enforcement Officer. This is not a position for Police Recruits.

Under general supervision, this role involves performing law enforcement duties and crime prevention activities; managing traffic flow and enforcing relevant state and local traffic laws; conducting investigations; and executing related tasks as assigned.

If you are a lateral candidate from out of state and have not yet obtained a POST waiver, it is necessary to complete this prior to your hiring date.

Selection Process

Oral Panel Appraisal Interview:
This involves an assessment of general experience, education, judgment, problem-solving abilities, and communication skills. Candidates deemed 'Highly Qualified' will progress in the selection process.

Background Appraisal Interview:
Completion and review of a detailed Personal History Statement. Candidates meeting the basic criteria will undergo a background investigation.

Comprehensive Background Investigation:
This includes a thorough examination of the candidate's personal history and suitability for employment as a law enforcement officer, based on POST-defined job dimensions. A lie detection polygraph screening is also required.

Captains' Interview:
Personal interviews with the Captain of Field Operations and the Captain of Support Operations.

Final Steps:
Psychological and medical evaluations are mandatory prior to hiring. The Chief of Police has the authority to select/appoint any individual who successfully completes the process. Appointments are probationary for one year.

Unless otherwise specified, a passing score is required at each stage of the selection process to have your name placed on the eligibility list for hiring consideration.

Key Responsibilities

- Patrol the city using radio, vehicle, or on foot; respond to calls for the protection of life and property, and enforce city, county, and state laws.
- Conduct both preliminary and follow-up investigations of disturbances, burglaries, thefts, vehicle accidents, and other criminal incidents.
- Make arrests as necessary; interview victims, complainants, and witnesses; interrogate suspects; gather and preserve evidence; testify and present evidence in court.
- Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies regarding crime investigations and the apprehension of offenders.
- Prepare reports on arrests made, investigations conducted, and unusual incidents observed.
- Serve warrants and subpoenas.
- While on patrol, stop drivers violating laws; issue warnings, citations, and make arrests as necessary.
- Check buildings for security; receive, search, book, fingerprint, and transport prisoners.
- Direct traffic during emergencies and special events.
- Administer first aid in emergency situations.
- Participate as an investigative officer in programs addressing juvenile delinquency and explore alternative methods for handling juveniles in the criminal justice system.
- Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement issues and foster positive relationships with the community.

Qualifications

Ability to:
- Accurately observe and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents, and locations.
- Safely use and maintain firearms.
- Think and act swiftly in emergencies, and assess situations and individuals accurately.
- Learn, understand, and interpret laws and regulations.
- Prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports.
- Learn standard police radio broadcasting procedures.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those encountered during work.
- Understand and execute oral and written instructions.
- Meet the physical standards of stature, endurance, and agility set by the city.

Experience & Education
Any combination of experience and education that is likely to provide the required abilities is qualifying. A typical way to acquire these abilities would be through graduation from high school or an equivalent program.

Special Requirements:
- Must meet the standards established for peace officers as defined by California Government Code Section 1031.
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
- Obtain a Peace Officers Standards and Training Basic Certificate.
