JOB SUMMARY: Control and Protection Engineer

Scope of Work:
The engineer will play a crucial role in establishing substation standards for Iberdrola. Responsibilities include drafting engineering and construction specifications, as well as creating and maintaining design libraries for substations, which encompass specifications and bills of materials. The engineer will operate under the guidance of supervision and will stay informed about advancements in the power sector through training and industry associations. This role involves collaborating with teams on projects that address intricate substation equipment and design challenges, employing a comprehensive approach to discover innovative solutions.

MAJOR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify and undertake special projects and studies that creatively address unique and complex challenges with significant business impact. Propose alternative methods or design concepts to resolve distinctive issues or enhance processes/services.
  • Resolve intricate and unique engineering challenges related to substations, leveraging a broad perspective to explore and implement innovative solutions.
  • Contribute to the formulation and execution of departmental or divisional strategies. Anticipate internal and external business challenges and suggest process enhancements.
  • Create and sustain design libraries for medium and high voltage substations in alignment with departmental objectives. Develop a strategy to update libraries based on lessons learned, emerging practices, and industry trends.
  • Possess a certain level of expertise in critical disciplines for Iberdrola, including:
    • Bus Configurations
    • Functional diagrams for control and protection
    • Protection, control, and communication schemes
    • Control and protection schematics
    • Wiring diagrams and cable schedules
  • Analyze internal and external business challenges and recommend best practices and process improvements. Engage in industry associations.
  • Lead teams, serve as a facilitator, and act as an experienced mentor. Innovate services and technologies, and provide recommendations regarding current and future customer and stakeholder needs. Deliver presentations to regulatory and public entities.
  • Design systems to tackle highly complex issues in non-standard situations and develop creative solutions that meet divisional objectives. Independently apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines, and Iberdrola policies and procedures.
  • Exhibit extensive knowledge and understanding of processes and standards related to substation engineering. Recommend solutions and best practices as appropriate. Represent Process and Technologies on projects, task forces, and studies.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET accredited college/university.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in engineering roles.
  • Advanced specialized training or a graduate-level engineering degree is also required.
  • Possess comprehensive experience in electric transmission or distribution standards engineering and knowledge of internal and external business and regulatory matters.
  • Recognized as an expert in the relevant field within the organization and industry.
  • Maintain awareness of cutting-edge techniques or technologies through active participation in professional associations.
  • A Professional Engineering license from the State of Connecticut, New York, or Maine is preferred.
