Position Overview:
Under the direct oversight of the Supervisor of Surgical Processing and Support Services, the Certified Sterile Processing Specialist is responsible for training in various functions within the Sterile Processing Department.

Training and Responsibilities:
This role is designed as an entry-level position, with the duration of training contingent upon prior experience. The specialist will:

  • Complete training in all facets of the Sterile Processing Department and specific areas of the Surgical Suite, including decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and equipment testing.
  • Adhere to daily assignments as specified in the shift assignment sheet and demonstrate adaptability when reassigned.
  • Collect and sanitize instruments and equipment post-use, inspecting for any malfunctions or missing components, and report findings to management.
  • Assemble instruments and equipment in accordance with departmental standards, utilizing the daily Production Screen and Key Supply List.
  • Wrap and/or place instruments and equipment in sterilization containers, employing all available sterilization methods and completing necessary documentation.

Operational Duties:
Work in Central Distribution during night shifts, assisting in maintaining adequate inventory levels of instruments, equipment, and supplies. Responsibilities also include:

  • Daily cleaning and restocking of work areas.
  • Monthly departmental cleaning and documentation as directed.
  • Providing operating rooms with requested equipment and instrumentation.
  • Ensuring compliance with Sterile Processing and Operating Room policies and procedures.
  • Checking for outdated supplies and acting as a messenger when required.

Performance Standards:
The specialist must work efficiently and accurately to meet supply demands while maintaining quality standards. Attendance at all mandatory in-service programs is required, along with completion of necessary education and training to uphold departmental competencies.

Qualifications:
Applicants should possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of Sterile Processing registration or certification is expected within a specified timeframe post-hire. Failure to achieve certification may result in reassignment from the position.

Skills and Experience:
Preferred candidates will have:

  • Experience in Sterile Processing or as a Surgical Technician.
  • Working knowledge of Operating Room instrumentation.

Physical Requirements:
Candidates must be able to perform duties while standing, sitting, or reaching for extended periods. The role requires the ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds regularly and navigate carts weighing up to 100 pounds. Additionally, candidates must have the dexterity to perform essential functions such as instrument counting and assembly.
