Position Overview
The Operating Room Surgical Specialist collaborates under the guidance of a surgeon to ensure the smooth and secure execution of both invasive and non-invasive surgical interventions. This role is crucial in maintaining a safe operating room atmosphere, ensuring that all equipment is functioning optimally, and that surgical procedures are conducted in a manner that prioritizes patient safety.
Surgical specialists possess in-depth knowledge of aseptic principles and sterile techniques, integrating their understanding of human anatomy, surgical methods, and the use of various tools and technologies to assist physicians in performing therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducts surgical scrubs and dons appropriate operating room attire and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Aids team members in gowning, gloving, and draping to establish a sterile environment.
- Collects, verifies, and opens necessary supplies and equipment for surgical procedures.
- Assembles instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications required for the procedure in an aseptic manner.
- Performs initial and ongoing counts of instruments, sharps, and sponges as per established protocols.
- Assists in the safe transfer and positioning of patients, ensuring their comfort and maintaining normothermia.
- Prepares the surgical site, including hair removal and skin preparation, as needed.
- Actively engages in the time-out procedure to ensure safety.
- Manages sponges or suction at the surgical site, prepares and cuts suture materials as directed by the surgeon, and measures and passes medications and irrigation solutions during the procedure.
- Transfers medications as instructed but does not administer them.
- Assists with cauterization techniques and holds instruments as directed by the surgeon.
Maintains continuity of care post-operation by assisting with dressing applications and helping to reposition patients for safe transport.
Prepares bone and tissue products as required and ensures proper handling and transfer of specimens in accordance with policies.
Operates sterilization equipment, adjusts surgical tables, and manages microscopes and other surgical apparatus, ensuring all are functioning correctly and safely; sets up supplies and instruments using aseptic techniques.
The Registered Nurse Circulator may delegate tasks as necessary, including assisting anesthesia and supporting complex procedures within the defined scope of practice. Competency in placing urinary catheters must be documented prior to performing this task.
The Second Surgical Specialist assists the surgeon and/or first assistant during procedures by executing additional technical tasks (excluding cutting, clamping, or suturing of tissue).
Duties include, but are not limited to: holding retractors or instruments as instructed by the surgeon, managing sponges or suction at the operative site, applying electrocautery to clamps or forceps on blood vessels, cutting suture materials as directed, connecting drains to suction devices, and applying dressings to closed wounds.
All other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
Education:
Completion of an accredited surgical technology program or military training.
Experience:
Three (3) to Five (5) years of relevant experience preferred.

Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist is preferred.

40 hours/week, flexible 8's or 10's
