Principal Engineer, Substation Equipment Guidelines

Job Overview:

Role Purpose:
This role involves collaborating with a skilled team to review, enhance, and establish substation standards essential for supporting capital projects, including distribution and transmission interconnections, as well as innovative technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and refine National Grid's Substation Engineering and Design philosophy, including standards, guidelines, and equipment specifications.
2. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and identify potential risks.
3. Provide technical support across various departments, including Engineering, Design, Operations, IT, and Construction.
4. Deliver exceptional customer service while promoting standardization and design efficiency.
5. Engage with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to facilitate the development of standards and training programs.
6. Attend industry conferences and seminars to stay updated on new technologies and standards.
7. Address technical challenges in the updating and development of standards.
8. Conduct calculations and studies to support substation design criteria.
9. Prepare detailed reports on technical issues, findings, and recommendations.
10. Review engineering documents, including single lines, physical plans, and material lists.
11. Research and advocate for the adoption of innovative technologies in the substation sector.
12. Travel as necessary for manufacturer qualifications and industry events.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in power systems engineering or related fields (6 years preferred).
- Proficient in MS Office Suite and familiar with engineering software tools.
- Strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Knowledge of industry standards and electrical design codes.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record.
- Willingness to travel and work extended hours as needed.
