Position Overview:

This role is pivotal in ensuring the seamless operation of laboratory facilities and equipment under the guidance of the Department Administrator. The incumbent will oversee compliance with safety standards and provide essential operational support to educational laboratories for medical students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and ensure the functionality of laboratory equipment and facilities; coordinate maintenance services and liaise with vendors to address any issues. Evaluate and implement cost-effective preventive maintenance strategies and schedules. Manage inventory of repair parts and oversee problem resolution.
  • Collaborate with Facilities Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, and Radiation Safety Office to uphold compliance with regulatory standards. Proactively identify and mitigate potential safety hazards. Conduct training sessions for departmental staff as necessary.
  • Manage interactions with IT for computer system maintenance.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the shipment of biohazard materials.
  • Coordinate laboratory courses for students in partnership with faculty lab coordinators, ensuring timely procurement, storage, and setup of materials and equipment, as well as conducting safety assessments for biological procedures and managing biological waste disposal.
  • Conduct physical inventory of all laboratory equipment and maintain accurate records of equipment movement, acquisition, or disposal. Respond to requests for updates from asset management.
  • Ensure functionality of audiovisual equipment in the department and provide on-site support as needed.
  • Advise the Administrator and Faculty on proposed renovation initiatives.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Problem Solving and Decision Making:

  • Independently plan, organize, and execute work procedures within established guidelines, escalating significant issues to the Department Administrator or relevant Principal Investigator.
  • Utilize independent judgment to address and resolve problems effectively.

Planning:

  • Engage in long-term planning for the maintenance and replacement of laboratory equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Solid foundational knowledge and experience in biomedical laboratory techniques.
  • Proficiency with both PC and Mac operating systems.
  • Manual dexterity for handling hazardous materials safely.
  • Visual acuity necessary for performing tasks in a laboratory environment.
  • Physical capability to lift items weighing up to 50 lbs.

Working Conditions:

This position operates within a scientific laboratory environment, which may involve exposure to biohazards, radionuclides, toxins, animals, and human specimens.
