Job Summary

Roanoke County Schools is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Instructional Assistant to support our instructional objectives and provide human support to students with special needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist classroom teachers in performing specific duties as assigned, ensuring a collaborative and effective learning environment.
  • Undertake specialized tasks to achieve and enhance instructional objectives, utilizing expertise in instructional design and delivery.
  • Work with individuals or small groups to reinforce material introduced by the teacher, promoting student engagement and understanding.
  • Provide programmed practice activities and repetitions as developed by the teacher, therapist, or pathologist, supporting student progress and achievement.
  • Assist with large group activities, ensuring a smooth and efficient learning experience.
  • Escort students to special classes and therapy, providing a safe and supportive environment.
  • Guide independent study and other work assigned by the teacher, promoting student autonomy and responsibility.
  • Report student problems to the teacher and assist with student problems, demonstrating a commitment to student well-being.
  • Assist students' mobility needs, including loading and unloading buses, ensuring a safe and accessible environment.
  • Assist with breakfast, lunch, snack, clean-up, lavatory, clothing, personal hygiene, and wash-up routines, promoting a healthy and respectful environment.
  • General knowledge of the practices, methods, and techniques used in the teaching of special education populations, staying up-to-date with best practices and research.
  • Ability to maintain files and information, ensuring accurate and efficient record-keeping.
  • Ability to deal effectively with special education students and teachers, demonstrating empathy and understanding.
  • Skilled in the use of classroom and instructional equipment, ensuring a smooth and efficient learning experience.
  • Ability to operate audio-visual, standard office, work, and data processing equipment, staying up-to-date with technology and software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students, and other support staff, promoting a positive and collaborative environment.
  • Additional training may be required, demonstrating a commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Practices confidentiality always, maintaining the trust and respect of students, parents, and colleagues.

  • Reassignment may occur at any time throughout the school year based on student needs and changes in enrollment, ensuring a flexible and responsive approach.
Education and Experience
  • Minimum high school diploma or GED Equivalent, demonstrating a strong foundation in education and learning.
  • A minimum of two years college experience OR successfully completed ParaPro Assessment is required at Title I schools, ensuring a strong understanding of instructional design and delivery.
  • Experience working with children is preferred, demonstrating a commitment to working with students and families.
