Position Overview

EDUCATION MINNESOTA

ROLE SUMMARY:

The Legal Intern will engage in comprehensive legal research and drafting tasks within the Legal Division, which comprises a team of seven attorneys dedicated to supporting Education Minnesota. This role may involve aiding attorneys in matters such as grievance arbitrations, licensing issues, long-term disability appeals, and other legal concerns arising in the context of unionized public school districts. Interns will gain valuable practical experience and insight into Minnesota's legal framework concerning public education, data management, and labor relations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support legal research and writing assignments under the guidance of supervising attorneys and the General Counsel.
  • Revise legal documentation and maintain records with summaries of recent judicial and arbitration outcomes.
  • Assist attorneys in preparing for arbitration sessions and administrative hearings.
  • Maintain accurate records of hours worked and tasks completed for billing and documentation purposes.
  • Engage in legal strategy meetings with attorneys to assess the viability of cases for arbitration.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Exceptional reading comprehension, verbal, and written communication abilities.
  • Familiarity with legal research platforms such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, or BloombergBNA.
  • Capability to manage multiple research and writing assignments while maintaining regular communication with various attorneys regarding their requirements and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in drafting persuasive advocacy letters on behalf of clients.
  • Ability to summarize judicial and regulatory rulings both verbally and in written reports for attorneys.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited law school.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Academic or practical experience in labor, employment, or education law.
  • Currently in the second year of law school.

CONFIDENTIALITY:

Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information related to staff, the organization, and its members.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is situated in a standard office setting. The employee is expected to engage in various physical activities, including talking, hearing, standing, walking, and using hands dexterously. The role may require lifting and carrying items up to 10 pounds regularly, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Some travel may be required, including overnight stays.
  • Evening and weekend work may be necessary.
  • Ability to uphold confidentiality is essential.
