Position Overview

ROLE SUMMARY:

The Legal Intern will engage in comprehensive legal research and drafting for the Legal Department, which comprises a team of seven attorneys at Education Minnesota. This role may involve supporting attorneys in various matters, including grievance arbitrations, licensure issues, long-term disability appeals, and other legal concerns arising within unionized public school districts. Interns will gain valuable experience and insight into Minnesota laws related to public education, data practices, and labor and employment law.

Education Minnesota is a member-driven labor union that prioritizes racial equity and social justice as core organizational objectives. All staff members are expected to actively participate in ongoing training, discussions, and initiatives aimed at promoting these goals.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in legal research and writing tasks under the guidance of staff attorneys and the General Counsel.
  • Update legal documentation and record-keeping systems with summaries of recent court rulings and arbitration outcomes.
  • Support attorneys in preparing for arbitration hearings and administrative proceedings.
  • Maintain accurate records of hours worked and tasks completed for billing and documentation purposes.
  • Engage in legal meetings with attorneys to assess the viability of cases for arbitration.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent reading comprehension, verbal, and written communication abilities.
  • Familiarity with legal research platforms such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, or BloombergBNA.
  • Capability to manage multiple research and writing assignments while maintaining regular communication with various attorneys regarding their needs and deadlines.
  • Ability to draft compelling advocacy letters on behalf of clients.
  • Skill in summarizing judicial and regulatory decisions both verbally and in written memoranda for attorneys.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited law school.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Academic or practical experience in labor, employment, or education law.
  • Currently in the second year of law school.

CONFIDENTIALITY:

Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information related to staff, the organization, and member data.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position is situated in a standard office setting. The employee is required to communicate effectively, frequently stand, walk, and use hands dexterously. The role may involve lifting and carrying items up to 10 pounds regularly, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some travel may be required, including overnight stays.
  • Availability for evening and weekend work is necessary.
  • Ability to uphold confidentiality is essential.
