Job Summary

The Center for Health Statistics, located within MDH's Community Health Division, has an exciting opportunity for a BRFSS Analyst Intern to join our team

This internship will exist to support analysis of data collected by the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) so that the data can be shared with MDH programs and external stakeholders. The position will produce descriptive statistics of weighted BRFSS data using statistical programs such as Stata, R, SPSS, or SAS and will produce data charts, tables, and visualizations using programs in Excel and Tableau. The position will work closely with the BRFSS Director to produce a summary report of BRFSS data on chronic disease prevalence, health risk/protective behaviors, and utilization of preventative health services.

This position is part-time and will work 20 hours per week. The specific hours and days of work are flexible within 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This position will have the option of teleworking based on the business needs of the unit; teleworking is at supervisory discretion. This is a temporary position with an anticipated end date of February 2025.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for this internship, you must meet the following requirements:
  • You must be a student at an accredited educational institution.
  • Your advisor must certify that you will either receive academic credit or fulfill an academic requirement. The signature of a sponsoring academic instructor is required prior to beginning an internship.
AND
  • Completion of at least two (2) years of coursework of post-secondary education with some coursework in statistics, data analysis, and/or research methods relevant to the work of the position.
  • Experience using Stata, SAS, R and/or SPSS.
  • Experience proofing, editing and formatting reports.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with current registration in a Master's or Doctoral program in data analytics, statistics, epidemiology, or related fields with a focus on quantitative data analysis.
  • Experience analyzing weighted survey data using statistical program.
  • Experience evaluating health equity using quantitative methods.
  • Ability to create high-quality data tables, charts, and visualizations.
  • Experience communicating research findings to diverse audiences.
