Position Overview

This role is under the supervision of the Section Chief of Body Imaging and the Chair of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology. The primary responsibilities include (1) executing image-guided interventions and fluoroscopic examinations, (2) collaborating with Radiology nursing staff and technologists to prepare patients for procedures and sedation, (3) overseeing nurse-administered moderate sedation for MRI or CT, (4) engaging in process enhancement initiatives with clinic management, and (5) delivering educational support to residents, staff, and students as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Conduct a variety of image-guided interventions such as ultrasound-guided paracentesis, thoracentesis, fine needle aspiration and biopsy, and MRI-guided prostate biopsy.
  • Perform gastrointestinal fluoroscopic procedures including esophagram, upper GI series, and joint injections.
  • Oversee moderate sedation provided by radiology nurses and manage mild sedation when required.
  • Supervise x-ray technologists during modified barium swallow procedures.
  • Mentor residents in the execution of the aforementioned procedures.
  • Document preliminary radiologic interpretations and discuss findings with supervising radiologists.
  • Ensure proper recovery post-procedure and address any complications, coordinating necessary clinical care.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff to manage pre-procedural medical considerations.
  • Work alongside radiology lead technologists to implement process improvements.
  • Maintain communication with attending physicians regarding patient status and treatment plans.
  • Engage with patients and their families to discuss imaging results.
  • Follow established best practices and institutional policies.
  • Acquire training on the safe application of fluoroscopy and radiation safety protocols.
  • Participate in after-hours on-call duties as needed.

Educational Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction and supervision to residents and medical students in radiology procedures.
  • Engage in classroom teaching and hands-on training in simulation environments.
  • Participate in weekly educational rounds.
  • Collaborate with team members to develop clinical pathways and patient education resources.
  • Assist in the onboarding and training of new Advanced Practice Providers.
  • Work with clinic staff to enhance patient care infrastructure.
  • Attend and contribute to Grand Rounds, conferences, and other educational opportunities.

Leadership and Administrative Duties

  • Support the onboarding process for new Advanced Practice Providers.
  • Facilitate communication among APPs in various settings.
  • Participate in the recruitment of new APPs.
  • Collaborate with APPs to ensure understanding of departmental policies and practices.
  • Work with clinic management to achieve quality patient care objectives.
  • Assist in recruitment efforts as needed.
  • Advocate for the needs of APPs within the department.

Quality Improvement and Research

  • Encourage the application of research findings to enhance care standards.
  • Collaborate with healthcare leadership to address patient concerns.
  • Efficiently manage clinic resources.
  • Engage as a sub-investigator in clinical research initiatives.

Required Qualifications

Physician Associate:

  • Candidates must possess or obtain a State of Oregon Physician Associate license prior to employment. A Limited Fluoroscopy Permit is required within one year of hire. ACLS/BLS certification is mandatory. Active participation in professional organizations and continuing education is encouraged.

Fluoroscopy Requirements:

  • Applicants must have or will obtain a limited fluoroscopy permit through the Oregon Board of Medical Imaging within one year of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in radiology is preferred; however, procedural or clinical surgical experience is also acceptable.
