Overview
This role is integral to the Body Imaging section and reports directly to the Section Chief and the Chair of Diagnostic Radiology. The primary objectives include (1) executing image-guided interventions and fluoroscopic examinations, (2) collaborating with Radiology nursing staff and technologists to prepare patients for procedures and sedation, (3) overseeing nurse-administered moderate sedation for imaging studies, (4) engaging in process enhancement initiatives with clinic management, and (5) delivering educational support to residents, staff, and students as necessary.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Conduct a variety of image-guided interventions such as ultrasound-guided paracentesis, thoracentesis, and fine needle aspirations.
- Perform gastrointestinal fluoroscopic studies including esophagrams, upper GI series, and contrast enemas.
- Supervise the administration of moderate sedation by radiology nursing staff and provide oversight for mild sedation as required.
- Oversee x-ray technologists conducting modified barium swallow studies.
- Mentor residents in the execution of these procedures.
- Generate preliminary radiologic reports and discuss findings with supervising radiologists.
- Manage recovery from procedures and address any complications, coordinating care as needed.
- Assist in managing pre-procedural medical considerations in collaboration with nursing staff and radiologists.
- Collaborate with radiology technical leads to enhance operational processes.
- Communicate effectively with attending physicians regarding patient conditions and treatment strategies.
- Engage with patients and their families to discuss imaging results and address inquiries.
- Adhere to established protocols and institutional policies.
- Participate in ongoing training regarding fluoroscopy safety and radiation precautions.
- Provide after-hours on-call coverage as necessary.
Educational Contributions
- Instruct and supervise residents and medical students in radiology procedures.
- Facilitate classroom and hands-on training sessions for medical trainees.
- Participate in weekly educational rounds.
- Collaborate with team members to develop clinical pathways and patient education resources.
- Assist in the onboarding and training of new Advanced Practice Providers.
- Work with clinic staff to optimize patient care infrastructure.
- Engage in professional development activities such as conferences and lectures.
Leadership and Management
- Contribute to the onboarding process for new Advanced Practice Providers.
- Foster communication among APPs in various settings through regular meetings.
- Assist in the recruitment and selection of new APPs.
- Collaborate with APPs to ensure understanding of departmental policies and procedures.
- Support clinic staff in quality improvement initiatives.
- Advocate for the needs of APPs within the department.
Quality Improvement and Research
- Encourage the application of research findings to enhance patient care standards.
- Collaborate with leadership and staff to address patient feedback and concerns.
- Efficiently manage clinic resources.
- Participate in clinical research as a sub-investigator.
Required Qualifications
Physician Associate:
- Candidates must possess or be eligible for a State of Oregon Physician Associate license. A Limited Fluoroscopy Permit must be obtained within one year of hire. ACLS/BLS certification is mandatory, and membership in a professional organization is recommended.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in radiology is preferred, though procedural or clinical surgical experience is also acceptable.
