Position Title: Engineering Technician V

Role Overview: The Engineering Technician V role will provide support to the Sensors and SONAR Systems Department at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport, which oversees a comprehensive range of engineering and research initiatives related to Sensors, SONAR, Undersea Warfare, and Autonomous Vehicles.

Engineering services are essential for tasks such as analysis, in-service engineering, prototype development, testing and evaluation, and system engineering services in support of Towed, Hull, and Sensor System programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Designing, fabricating, delivering, updating, testing, and maintaining specialized prototype and testing hardware.
  • Integrating prototype and testing hardware into laboratory and shipboard settings.
  • Creating or modifying integration plans and supplying all necessary materials, cables, connectors, mock-ups, equipment, test devices, tools, commercial software, shipping containers, and consumables for effective hardware integration.
  • Updating and managing hardware documentation, including Hardware Development Plans, to reflect changes from specifications, testing, and conversion requirements.
  • Conducting operability and longevity tests in both laboratory and shipboard environments.
  • Providing troubleshooting and reconfiguration support for system hardware.
  • Participating in shipboard testing, repair, and installation activities.
  • Offering remote support for deployed platforms.
  • Inspecting, evaluating, troubleshooting, and repairing electronic assemblies in accordance with U.S. Navy and local work instructions.
  • Developing and updating local work instructions for evaluations and repairs.
  • Conducting receipt inspections of materials and components.
  • Maintaining and auditing inventories of materials and repair parts.
  • Researching and procuring repair parts.
  • Ensuring proprietary laboratory test units and systems are maintained for optimal operating condition and readiness.
  • Preparing and maintaining reports and laboratory procedures to align with current standards and practices.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Proficient understanding of Naval Technical Manuals and IETMs.
  • Familiarity with the Naval Supply System.
  • Knowledge of shipboard processes and regulations for conducting alteration work.
  • Experience with various types of computer hardware and software is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a SECRET Clearance.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Capability to complete tasks promptly to meet repair deadlines and/or ship schedules.
  • Exceptional organizational, critical thinking skills, and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of contractor and government/military organizations.
  • Experience operating various types of electronic test equipment (Digital multimeter, oscilloscope, signal injector, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics and diagrams.
  • Physical capability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to travel (less than 20%).

Work Location: Newport RI, with minimal-to-no telework available.

A Department of Defense Secret Security Clearance or higher is required at the time of hire.
