About Mosaic

Mosaic is a national funder and field catalyst, committed to creating a stronger, more impactful environmental movement by funding the field-wide shared tools and collaborative connections that equip organizations working for clear air and water, a safe climate, healthy and just communities for all, and thriving natural systems.

With its innovative model of participatory grantmaking, Mosaic is committed to making transformative investments that build and support powerful coalitions, bringing in new voices, and scaling the shared tools that are essential to boost our collective power.

The Opportunity

As one of the only funders exclusively focused on building movement infrastructure—the connections and shared resources all movements need—Mosaic is committed to building the power necessary for lasting environmental and social change.

A stable climate, clean air and water, healthy communities, and thriving natural systems all hang in the balance during this critical decade.

About the Position

As the first Development Director for Mosaic, you will work in close partnership with the Executive Director to shape and drive all fundraising efforts, manage existing relationships with key institutional donors, and build a pipeline of new supporters as we rapidly scale our grantmaking and deploy more funding to the field.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Create a development plan aligned with Mosaic's mission, rallying staff and stakeholders around clear goals, and managing its execution to ensure targets are met.
  • Maintain and oversee a portfolio of high-capacity institutional donors, developing personalized engagement strategies for each.
  • Identify and research new fundraising prospects, including institutional and family foundations. Build strategic partnerships and make introductions to foster grantee and funder collaborations.
  • Implement a strategic approach to increase revenue, focusing on six, seven, and eight-figure gifts.
  • Align donor priorities with Mosaic's core initiatives, building compelling cases for increased support.
  • Drive the generation of $8-10M annually, with growth targets for subsequent years.
Requirements:
  • Proven fundraising success: at least 7 years of experience in fundraising, with a history of securing and renewing six+ figure gifts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: ability to navigate donor relationships, address challenges, and strategically guide supporters toward increased giving.
  • Strategic planning expertise: demonstrated experience in creating and executing creative and effective development strategies.
  • Exceptional communication skills: a skilled writer and storyteller, capable of engaging donors with compelling and vivid accounts of Mosaic's initiatives with polished, donor-specific materials.
  • Deep understanding of environmental and social justice issues: familiarity with environmental and social justice issues, systems change, social movements, and movement building. Ability to connect these issues with donor interests and advocate effectively for sustainable, equitable solutions.
  • Hands-on team player: willingness to roll up your sleeves and actively engage in day-to-day fundraising activities, from donor outreach to proposal writing, as a development team of one.
  • Project management excellence: proven ability to manage complex projects, set realistic goals, anticipate challenges, and diplomatically hold stakeholders accountable without direct lines of authority.
  • Adaptability and initiative: self-starter who learns quickly and thrives in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with fundraising databases: experience with Salesforce or similar CRM platforms is a plus.
  • Board engagement: experience collaborating with Boards of Directors is preferred.
Compensation and Location

The salary range for this position is $175,000-$205,000 annually. Mosaic offers an excellent benefits package, which includes group health insurance, dental, vision benefits & disability insurance, FSA/Transit spending accounts, Employee Assistance Program, vacation time, paid holidays, and a 403(b) plan.

This position has the option to work fully remotely. Most of our team is currently based in San Francisco and is working a hybrid schedule.

Mosaic is a fiscally sponsored project of the Tides Foundation.
