Position Overview

This role is situated within the Nutrition and Food Services department, primarily responsible for executing a diverse range of tasks related to food service operations. Food Service Workers engage in multi-step processes that necessitate a keen focus on operational procedures. The individual will operate under the guidance of the Cook Supervisor.

DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority as per federal regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Prepare designated workstations with necessary supplies and food items. Serve meals in a cafeteria style, ensuring uniform portion sizes on customers'/patients'/residents' plates.
  • Disassemble and sanitize the workstation as assigned.
  • Arrange dining tables for service, placing food and beverages, and restocking items as needed.
  • Return used trays and utensils to the dishwashing area.
  • Deliver meal trays to patients' bedsides and communicate any feedback or concerns to the supervisor or dietitian.
  • Assist cooks in food preparation tasks, including weighing, measuring, and assembling ingredients according to established recipes.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain all equipment assigned to food service and related areas.
  • Portion food items into standard serving sizes using appropriate utensils and dishware.
  • Interpret regular or modified menus, individual diet cards, tray tickets, or patient selections.
  • Conduct thorough cleaning tasks throughout food service and related areas.
  • Sort food waste, trash, and recyclables from dishes, glasses, and cutlery.
  • Unload food delivery carts.
  • Store sanitized dishes, glasses, and cutlery appropriately.
  • Manage garbage collection and transfer from work areas to disposal locations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to meet the operational needs of the facility.
Work Schedule: Various schedules based on service requirements.

Incentives: Not authorized

Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): This position qualifies for a 20% Critical Skills Incentive (CSI) in addition to the standard salary. Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI if onboarded before the expiration date. Eligible candidates must sign a service agreement committing to an obligated service period.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not mandated, but applicants must demonstrate training or experience sufficient to perform the duties of this position. Evidence of knowledge, skills, and abilities must be clearly detailed in the resume. Applicants will be evaluated according to federal qualification standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Qualifications will first be assessed against the prescribed screen-out element. Those meeting the minimum qualifications will be considered for further evaluation.

Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer activities.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: This role requires light to moderate physical effort, with potential for heavy work such as scrubbing large cooking utensils and maneuvering heavy carts. Continuous standing and walking, along with frequent bending and lifting, are necessary.

No formal education qualification is required for this position.

Additional Information

This position is eligible for a Critical Skills Incentive through the Veterans Health Administration. Candidates may qualify for a lump sum CSI.
