Position Overview

This role is situated within the Veterans Health Administration, specifically in the Nutrition and Food Services department. The primary responsibility is to execute a variety of tasks essential for food service operations. Food Service Workers engage in multiple sequential tasks that demand careful attention to detail and adherence to operational standards. The incumbent will operate under the guidance of the Cook Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

Core duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Prepare designated workstations with necessary supplies and food items.
  • Serve meals in a cafeteria style, ensuring uniform portioning on plates for customers, patients, or residents.
  • Disassemble and sanitize the workstation as required.
  • Arrange dining tables for service, ensuring food and beverages are appropriately placed and replenished as needed.
  • Return used trays and utensils to the dishwashing area.
  • Deliver meal trays to patients' bedsides, noting any feedback or concerns for the supervisor or dietitian.
  • Assist cooks in food preparation, including measuring and assembling ingredients per standardized recipes.
  • Operate, disassemble, and clean all food service equipment as assigned.
  • Portion food into standard serving sizes using the correct utensils and dishware.
  • Interpret regular or modified menus, individual diet cards, and tray tickets.
  • Conduct thorough cleaning tasks in food service areas.
  • Sort food waste and recyclables from dishes and utensils.
  • Unload delivery carts for food and trays.
  • Store sanitized dishes and utensils properly.
  • Manage garbage collection and transfer to disposal areas.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the Medical Center's needs.
Work Schedule: Various schedules will be established based on departmental requirements.

Position Description Title/PD#: Food Service Worker/PD99920A

Incentives: Recruitment or relocation incentives are not authorized.

Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): This position may qualify for a 20% Critical Skills Incentive in addition to the regular salary. Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI if onboard prior to the expiration date. A service agreement will be required for eligible candidates.

Physical Requirements: This role requires light to moderate physical effort, with occasional heavy work, such as scrubbing large cooking utensils and moving heavy carts. Continuous standing and walking, along with frequent bending and lifting, are necessary.

Education: No formal education requirements are established for this position.

This position is eligible for a Critical Skills Incentive through a specified date. Candidates may qualify for a lump sum CSI based on their appointment date.
