Position Overview

This role is situated within the Veterans Health Administration, specifically in the Nutrition and Food Services department. The primary responsibility is to execute a variety of tasks essential for food service operations. Food Service Workers engage in multi-step processes that necessitate careful attention to operational procedures. The individual will operate under the guidance of the Cook Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Prepare designated workstations with necessary supplies and food items.
  • Serve meals in a cafeteria style, ensuring uniform portions for customers, patients, or residents.
  • Disassemble and sanitize the workstation as required.
  • Arrange dining tables for service, placing food and beverages, and restocking items as needed.
  • Return used trays and dishes to the dishwashing area.
  • Deliver meal trays to patients' bedsides and communicate any feedback or concerns to the supervisor or dietitian.
  • Assist cooks in food preparation, including weighing, measuring, and assembling ingredients per standardized recipes.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain all food service equipment.
  • Portion food into standard serving sizes using appropriate utensils and dishware.
  • Interpret regular or modified menus, individual diet cards, and tray tickets.
  • Conduct thorough cleaning tasks throughout food service areas.
  • Sort food waste and recyclables from dishes and utensils.
  • Unload food delivery carts.
  • Store sanitized dishes and utensils appropriately.
  • Manage waste disposal by transferring trash from work areas to disposal sites.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned to support the Medical Center's needs.
Work Schedule: Various schedules based on service requirements.

Incentives: Not applicable

Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): This position qualifies for a 20% Critical Skills Incentive (CSI) in addition to the standard salary. Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI if onboard before the expiration date. A service agreement will be required for eligible candidates.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Experience: While a specific length of training and experience is not mandated, candidates must demonstrate evidence of training or experience that showcases their ability to perform the duties of this position. Evidence must be detailed in the resume. Applicants will be evaluated according to the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Wage Grade 3 Food Service Workers perform tasks requiring light to moderate physical effort. They may need to engage in heavy work, such as scrubbing large cooking utensils and moving heavy carts. Continuous standing and walking, along with frequent bending and lifting, are required.

Education: No educational qualifications are necessary for this position.

Additional Information:

This role is considered for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive (CSI). Candidates may qualify for a lump sum CSI based on their appointment date. Eligible candidates must sign a service agreement.
