Post-Anesthesia Care Unit Nurse

As a vital member of the healthcare team at Nicklaus Children's Hospital, the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Nurse is responsible for the comprehensive planning and execution of patient care utilizing established nursing methodologies. This role involves overseeing the care plan for patients during the critical immediate post-operative phase, ensuring adherence to quality standards in a Magnet designated facility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the setup of PCA pumps and initiate blood transfusions in accordance with hospital protocols, including for patients in specialized units such as cardiac, ICU, NICU, PICU, and CICU.
- Deliver direct patient care through thorough assessment, recovery monitoring, and vital signs evaluation.
- Collaborate with medical professionals to review post-operative orders, ensuring timely and effective patient care.
- Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments, including head-to-toe evaluations, vital signs, pain management, post-anesthetic scoring, and airway management.
- Document and communicate patient progress, including critical findings and any changes in condition, to the relevant healthcare team members.
- Implement and document the care plan in partnership with interdisciplinary teams to guarantee safe and efficient patient care.
- Adhere to medication administration policies, ensuring compliance with the six rights of medication delivery.
- Foster a family-centered care environment by involving parents in the PACU and educating them on post-operative care and medications.
- Engage collaboratively with all levels of the hospital's interdisciplinary team, promoting teamwork within the department and across the institution.
- Interact with patients and families to discuss care plans, encouraging input and addressing any concerns with the physician.
- Participate in performance reviews through chart audits and documentation of quality metrics, ensuring timely completion of all requirements.
- Access and document in the electronic health record system in accordance with hospital policies, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Maintain a safe working environment by consistently following infection prevention protocols during assigned shifts.
- Participate in Environment of Care rounds to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Demonstrate appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Achieve or exceed unit standards in maintaining a 95% Clinical Excellence Index (CEI) and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure in the State of Florida or Multi-State Enhanced Nursing License Compact (eNLC).
- Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) is preferred.
- Able to analyze and interpret clinical data to inform patient care decisions.
- Willingness to float within Surgical Services while upholding clinical excellence and high-quality service.
- Availability for on-call assignments as required by departmental and hospital policies.
