Position Overview
As a vital member of our healthcare team, the Registered Nurse in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is responsible for the comprehensive planning and execution of patient care through established nursing methodologies. This role involves overseeing the care plan for patients in the critical immediate post-operative phase, employing effective problem-solving techniques and evidence-based practices to uphold the quality standards of a Magnet-designated institution. The RN operates under the guidance of the Nursing Manager/Director, delivering compassionate and family-oriented care to PACU patients.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate patient recovery and support airway management in collaboration with Anesthesia during Phase I Post-Operative Care.
- Conduct thorough assessments of surgical sites, monitoring for circulation, color, temperature, and movement.
- Vigilantly observe for any signs of post-operative bleeding.
- Prepare and manage PCA pumps in accordance with established protocols and initiate blood transfusions as per policy.
- Deliver direct patient care through systematic assessment, recovery, vital signs monitoring, intervention, and evaluation.
- Collaborate with medical personnel to review post-operative orders, ensuring timely patient care.
- Complete comprehensive nursing assessments, including head-to-toe evaluations, vital signs, pain management, post-anesthetic scoring, and airway management.
- Effectively communicate and document patient progress, including critical findings and changes in condition, to the relevant healthcare team members.
- Implement and document care plans in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe and efficient patient care.
- Adhere to physician orders, administering medications while following the six rights of medication administration.
- Utilize the electronic health record (EHR) hand-off tool to facilitate seamless transitions of care from the OR RN and Anesthesiologist.
- Promote family-centered care by encouraging parental involvement in the PACU and educating families on post-operative care and medications.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to foster effective communication with families.
- Participate in performance reviews through chart audits and documentation of quality metrics, ensuring compliance with all requirements.
- Access and document in the electronic health record in accordance with hospital policies.
- Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to infection prevention protocols.
- Engage in Environment of Care rounds to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Demonstrate proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Provide accurate patient information during handoff processes.
- Meet or exceed unit standards for documentation and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure in the State of Florida or Multi-State Enhanced Nursing License Compact (eNLC).
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within one year of hire.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required within one year of hire.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or enrollment in a BSN program.
- National certification as a Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) or equivalent within five years of hire.
- At least one year of nursing experience preferred.
- Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
- Strong analytical and interpretive skills for patient care decision-making.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
- Capacity to work collaboratively within a team environment.
- Willingness to be available for on-call assignments as per departmental policies.
