Founded in New York in 1998 and expanding to Boston in 2005, Room to Grow currently collaborates with over 1,500 families, operating with an annual budget of $8.5 million and a dedicated team of over 50 staff members.

We employ a two-generation, preventative, and strengths-based approach to engage families. Our unique program allows parents and caregivers to work alongside our staff to develop strategies that support their child's growth, select necessary material items, and connect with community resources that enhance their support network.

Role Summary

As Room to Grow embarks on an exciting phase of growth and national expansion, we are seeking a Director of Institutional Giving. This pivotal role will oversee the organization’s fundraising efforts from foundations, corporations, in-kind donations, and government sources at both local and national levels.

Reporting directly to the Chief External Engagement Officer, the Director of Institutional Giving will play a crucial leadership role, responsible for crafting and executing comprehensive strategies to cultivate, solicit, and maintain relationships with institutional and government funders, thereby increasing financial support.

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, results-driven leader with a proven history of securing substantial funding from foundation and corporate sources. They will possess a strategic mindset, capable of translating organizational objectives into actionable fundraising initiatives. We are looking for a collaborative leader who excels at building relationships across departments and uniting stakeholders around common goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the leadership team to set institutional giving fundraising objectives and strategies that align with the organization’s overall goals.
  • Design and implement a strategic plan for institutional giving, encompassing prospect research, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Provide strategic direction and mentorship to the foundations and partnerships teams, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
  • Manage a portfolio of major donors, creating tailored cultivation and solicitation plans to enhance engagement and secure funding.
  • Collaborate with the foundations team to develop, write, and submit high-quality grant proposals and reports that effectively communicate the organization’s needs and impact.
  • Partner with the partnerships team to create customized proposals for corporate prospects and donors, emphasizing collaborative opportunities.
  • Identify and implement targeted prospecting strategies to cultivate new relationships with foundations, corporations, and government entities.
  • Establish donor recognition and stewardship opportunities to ensure institutional donors feel valued and connected.
  • Collaborate with the programs team to understand funding needs and programmatic priorities for compelling proposal development.
  • Work with the finance team to create budgets and financial reports for funding, ensuring accuracy and compliance with donor requirements.
  • Utilize donor management software to track interactions, manage relationships, and analyze fundraising performance metrics.
  • Oversee the institutional giving budget, allocating resources effectively to support fundraising initiatives.
  • Develop and implement key performance indicators to measure the success of institutional giving efforts.
  • Provide regular updates to leadership and the board regarding progress, successes, and challenges in institutional giving.
  • Support board members, staff, and volunteers involved in fundraising through training and ongoing communication.
  • Stay informed about trends in institutional giving and philanthropy, adapting strategies to enhance fundraising effectiveness.
  • Represent the organization at events and networking opportunities to promote fundraising initiatives and raise awareness of our mission.

Qualifications

  • A strong commitment to the mission and values of Room to Grow.
  • Over 5 years of demonstrated success in foundation and corporate fundraising.
  • Proven experience managing a portfolio of external relationships and building meaningful partnerships.
  • Track record of securing and stewarding significant institutional gifts.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating the organization’s mission and impact effectively.
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning abilities to develop comprehensive fundraising strategies.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in managing and motivating teams involved in fundraising.
  • Familiarity with the philanthropic landscape in major cities is a plus.
  • Experience with donor management software and fundraising tools.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Ability to travel as required.
