Room to Grow is a nonprofit organization committed to ensuring that all parents have the necessary resources to realize their families' potential and advocate for their children and community. Our mission is to provide structured support for parents, essential material goods, and community connections that empower them to harness their innate strengths and enhance their knowledge, ensuring children flourish from the outset. Established in New York in 1998 and expanding to Boston in 2005, we currently collaborate with over 1,500 families, operating with an annual budget of $8.5M and a dedicated team of over 50 staff members.

Utilizing a two-generation, preventative, and strengths-based approach, Room to Grow engages families through a unique program where parents and caregivers work with staff to devise strategies that support their child's development, select necessary items, and connect with community resources to broaden their support network. Our program staff partner with parents and caregivers to build on their existing skills and parenting styles, promoting the well-being of both children and families.

Role Summary

As Room to Grow embarks on an exciting phase of growth and national expansion, we are seeking a Director of Institutional Giving. This pivotal role will oversee the organization's fundraising efforts from foundations, corporations, in-kind donations, and government sources at both local and national levels.

Reporting to the Chief External Engagement Officer, the Director of Institutional Giving will play a crucial leadership role, responsible for crafting and executing comprehensive strategies to cultivate, solicit, and maintain relationships with institutional and government funders, ultimately driving increased financial contributions.

The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, results-driven leader with a proven history of securing substantial funding from foundation and corporate sources. They will possess a strategic mindset and the capability to translate organizational objectives into actionable fundraising strategies. We are looking for a collaborative and adaptable leader, skilled in building relationships across departments and uniting stakeholders around common goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with leadership to set institutional giving fundraising objectives and strategies aligned with organizational goals.
  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for institutional giving, encompassing prospect research, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Provide strategic direction and mentorship to the foundations and partnerships teams, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
  • Manage a portfolio of major donors, creating tailored cultivation and solicitation plans to enhance engagement and secure financial support.
  • In partnership with the foundations team, craft and submit high-quality grant proposals and reports that clearly communicate the organization's needs and impact.
  • Work with the partnerships team to develop customized partnership proposals for corporate prospects, emphasizing collaborative opportunities.
  • Identify and cultivate new foundation, corporate, and government relationships through targeted prospecting plans.
  • Create opportunities for donor recognition and stewardship, ensuring institutional donors feel valued and connected.
  • Collaborate with the programs team to understand funding needs and develop compelling proposals.
  • Partner with the finance team to prepare budgets and financial reports for funding, ensuring accuracy and compliance with donor requirements.
  • Utilize donor management software to track interactions, manage relationships, and analyze fundraising performance metrics.
  • Oversee the institutional giving budget, allocating resources effectively to support fundraising initiatives.
  • Establish key performance indicators to measure the success of institutional giving efforts.
  • Provide regular updates to leadership and the board on institutional giving progress and challenges.
  • Support board members, staff, and volunteers involved in fundraising through training and communication.
  • Stay informed about trends in institutional giving and philanthropy, adapting strategies to enhance fundraising effectiveness.
  • Represent the organization at events and networking opportunities to promote fundraising and raise awareness of our mission.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of successful experience in foundation and corporate fundraising.
  • Proven ability to manage a portfolio of external relationships and build meaningful partnerships.
  • Track record of securing and stewarding significant institutional gifts.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate the organization's mission to diverse audiences.
  • Strong strategic thinking and planning capabilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in managing and motivating teams.
  • Familiarity with the philanthropic landscape in key urban areas is a plus.
  • Experience with donor management software and fundraising tools.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Willingness to travel within the US as required.
