Radiation Safety Manager

The primary objective of this role is to ensure the radiological safety and health of employees, the public, and the environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert Health Physics guidance and oversight in Accelerator Safety Basis, Nuclear Safety Basis, and Radiological Protection.
  • Assist in the technical evaluation of laboratory Safety Assessment Documents (SADs), Accelerator Safety Envelopes (ASEs), and necessary procedures for safe accelerator operations.
  • Actively participate in the Laboratory Environment Safety and Health Committee.
  • Review and endorse all radiation protection measures during the design, operation, and maintenance of accelerators and related systems.
  • Evaluate engineering designs for new or modified accelerator/nuclear facilities.
  • Engage as a member of organizational radiation safety committees.
  • Contribute to the Laboratory's Safety Basis/Nuclear Safety Sub-Committee.
  • Take part in Internal Readiness Reviews (IRRs) and Accelerator Readiness Reviews (ARRs).
  • Conduct Waste Characterization Analysis and independent validation for the Waste Management Division.
  • Perform thorough assessments of key accelerator/nuclear safety programs as part of the Contractor Assurance Program.
  • Document instrument sensitivity studies for monitoring specific source terms.
  • Support the Radiological Control Division Quality Assurance Program.
  • Network with other professionals in the DOE contractor accelerator and nuclear safety fields.

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in Radiation Protection, Health Physics, or Nuclear Engineering.
  • Current American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) Certification in Health Physics (CHP).
  • A minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible experience in Operational Radiation Protection/Health Physics.
  • At least 5 years of experience managing a team of Radiation Protection/Health Physics professionals.
  • Strong understanding of DOE regulations and applicable standards.
  • Experience in performing or evaluating hazard analyses, radiological shielding designs, and interpreting radio-analytical sample results.
  • Excellent leadership, teamwork, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in high-energy particle accelerator facilities or nuclear facilities.
  • Practical knowledge in Internal/External Dosimetry and Radiation Shielding Analysis.
  • Experience at a DOE Nuclear Facility.
  • Participation in Accelerator Readiness Review (ARR) teams or similar safety review teams.
  • Familiarity with Monte Carlo simulation codes for facility shielding development.
  • Lean Six-Sigma Certification.
