Role Summary:
We are seeking a qualified individual for the position of Radiation Safety Specialist. Under the guidance of the Director of Radiation Safety, the selected candidate will support our Medical Physicists in executing our Medical Physics Program within Diagnostic Radiology and our Radioactive Materials Program, adhering to our Broad Scope Radioactive Materials Licenses.

The responsibilities of this role include:
  • Conducting tests on radiological imaging devices
  • Inspecting lead protective clothing
  • Performing decontamination surveys in laboratories and patient areas
  • Managing the handling and disposal of radioactive waste
  • Calibrating radiation detection instruments
  • Assisting medical personnel during radiopharmaceutical treatments

Key Responsibilities:
As a Radiation Safety Specialist, you will be responsible for:
  • Supervising scheduled radiation safety and quality assurance evaluations of imaging equipment, including:
    • Radiographic
    • Fluoroscopic
    • Computed Tomographic
    • Magnetic Resonance Imaging
    • Dental Radiographic
    • Primary Diagnostic Monitors
  • Conducting annual inspections of lead protective garments
  • Participating in radiation protection assessments
  • Setting up and decontaminating patient rooms utilized for radionuclide therapy
  • Performing additional Health Physics tasks during radiopharmaceutical treatments
  • Calibrating survey meters
  • Managing radioactive waste
  • Responding promptly to incidents involving radioactive material contamination

Additional Responsibilities:
Additional duties may be assigned by the Director of Radiation Safety as needed.

Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, candidates must possess:
  • A Master's degree in Physics or Applied Physics
  • A minimum of three years of experience in Health Physics or Medical Physics
  • A comprehensive understanding of Article 175 of the New York City Health Code

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred candidates will have:
  • A limited permit in Medical Physics
  • Strong communication skills to effectively interact with all organizational levels
