Job Summary

As a Phlebotomist at Northern Maine Medical Center, you will play a vital role in the Laboratory Department. Your primary responsibility will be to perform phlebotomy, clerical, and assistant functions to ensure the smooth operation of our laboratory services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures per established protocols to collect blood samples from patients.
  • Document all tests ordered in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to maintain accurate records.
  • Answer the telephone promptly and courteously to provide excellent customer service.
  • File reports and maintain confidentiality to protect patient information.
  • Obtain missing physician signatures and sort out lab reports for delivery to appropriate locations.
  • Order central and office supply items to maintain a well-stocked laboratory.
  • Stock shelves and phlebotomy baskets as needed to ensure efficient workflow.
  • Log and package pathology specimens for transport to other facilities.
  • Perform pathology charges and follow universal precautions to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Recognize and report all patient and employee safety issues to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Maintain educational training and professional development to stay up-to-date with the latest techniques and technologies.
  • Maintain a professional and friendly demeanor with patients and hospital staff to provide excellent customer service.
  • Perform related duties as needed to support the laboratory team.

Requirements

High school education is required, or equivalent. Experience and Phlebotomy Certification are preferred. If a course has not been completed, the applicant will participate in a phlebotomy class (online) by getting into the next available class after the hire date and completing the course within 6 months of hire while participating in on-the-job training. The hospital will finance the course with a one-year contract.

  • Finger dexterity is required to manipulate small objects, such as test tubes and microscope slides during cleaning and sterilization duties.
  • Clerical perception is necessary to sort and file reports and records and to avoid errors in transposition when posting information from one record to another.
  • Verbal ability is necessary for reading comprehension in filing or when answering the telephone.
