Job Responsibilities

The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for a part-time Forensic Autopsy Technician to join the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. This position is a wage role, averaging up to 29 hours per week, with a maximum of 1500 hours annually, and does not include benefits. The role requires flexibility with rotating shifts, including days, weekends, and holidays, and may involve working outside of standard hours.

This position plays a crucial role in assisting forensic pathologists during autopsy procedures. Responsibilities include:

  • Performing incisions and assisting in the removal and weighing of organs.
  • Conducting x-rays and digital photography.
  • Collecting evidence and fingerprinting.
  • Documenting findings accurately.
  • Managing the retrieval, admission, and release of bodies.
  • Maintaining cleanliness in the morgue facility and ensuring proper upkeep of morgue equipment and vehicles.
  • Instructing both internal and external personnel on morgue protocols.
  • Ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Preserving evidence and responding to mass disaster scenes when necessary.

Employment Conditions

  • Wage employees do not receive benefits typically offered to salaried staff.
  • Compensation is based solely on hours worked.
  • State law limits wage employees to an average of 29 hours per week and a total of 1500 hours per year.
  • Reemployment as a wage employee is contingent upon the conclusion of the Standard Measurement Period.
  • Wage employees may apply for classified positions and can purchase retirement credit for time worked in this capacity.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

  • Effective verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and security protocols.
  • Physical capability to push/pull weights between 100 to 500 lbs. and lift with assistance.
  • Basic computer and data entry skills.
  • The ability to navigate challenging terrains and respond to emergency situations.
  • Experience in forensic autopsy tasks and handling biohazardous materials.

Additional Considerations

Prior experience with human remains in settings such as hospitals, morgues, or medical examiner facilities is preferred. Training in evidence handling is also advantageous.
