Position Overview:
The Pathologists' Assistant Supervisor oversees the grossing section, autopsy facilities, and pathology functions within the morgue. This role is pivotal in ensuring the effective collaboration between laboratory management, administrative staff, and medical professionals to uphold a skilled workforce aligned with VCU Health's mission and vision.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise scheduling, policy formulation, and daily operations of the grossing area, from specimen accessioning to processing.
  • Provide technical guidance to laboratory personnel and residents, ensuring thorough documentation of training and competency.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory standards and manage quality control and assurance functions.
  • Assist pathologists in the gross examination of surgical specimens and facilitate resident training in postmortem examinations.
  • Coordinate with the Medical Director to oversee mandatory training for pathology residents.

Qualifications:
Licensure:
Must be certified as a Pathologists' Assistant by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or be eligible for certification within three months of hire.

Experience:
Minimum of four years as a Pathologists' Assistant, with at least two years in a leadership capacity. Previous experience in histology and dissection is essential.

Education:
A Master's Degree in Science from an accredited Pathologists' Assistant Program is required.

Independent Actions:
Ability to perform independently while collaborating with management on personnel matters. Responsibilities may include troubleshooting laboratory issues and ensuring the maintenance and cleanliness of work areas.
