Department Overview

The Marketing, Communications & Brand Management Department plays a crucial role in executing and assessing the effectiveness of Catholic Medical's marketing, communication (both external and internal), and branding initiatives across various regions. This ensures that Catholic Medical is recognized both nationally and internationally, facilitating revenue generation and the development of programs that align with the organization's vision and strategic objectives.

Position Overview

The Head of Communications Strategy will be responsible for crafting, implementing, and overseeing communication strategies that effectively promote Catholic Medical's messaging and brand identity. This role involves leading multi-channel promotional initiatives and integrated campaigns that articulate the organization's narrative, driving engagement and support. The position demands strategic insight, leadership capabilities, innovative thinking, and exceptional writing and editing skills, with a focus on conveying complex concepts clearly through consistent messaging and storytelling techniques.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Development

  • Formulate, guide, and execute the communications strategy and annual communications plan to support Catholic Medical's strategic objectives and brand positioning.
  • Collaborate closely with the Strategy, Marketing, and Communications team to synchronize efforts.
  • Design and implement impactful campaigns and initiatives that utilize compelling narratives and materials to enhance Catholic Medical's brand, advocacy, and fundraising endeavors.
  • Establish strong partnerships with staff in various locations; work with communications leads to create and execute integrated communication strategies globally.
  • Partner with fundraising and marketing teams to develop communication strategies aimed at donor engagement, acquisition, and retention. Create engaging campaigns across all channels to attract new supporters and foster loyalty.

Content Development

  • Lead the creation of an engaging annual report that narrates the organization's story and highlights its programs while reflecting the brand and global impact.
  • Design and implement an internal content request and review system for gathering and producing stories, images, and other materials necessary for comprehensive organizational communications.
  • Generate creative concepts and oversee the production and dissemination of multimedia content, including but not limited to advertisements, acknowledgment letters, blogs, emails, newsletters, reports, and social media posts.
  • Provide leadership and strategic guidance to team members and local staff during multimedia content collection trips, ensuring consistency in content gathering across program sites.
  • Manage the team to ensure the maintenance of all graphical and digital assets.

Digital Communication

  • Lead efforts to evolve and enhance the organization's website.
  • Strengthen SEO practices, including the development of guidelines and training for communications staff on effective content writing to improve SEO outcomes.
  • Oversee content and design updates to the website, collaborating with various departments.
  • Guide the donor experience and fundraising campaigns on the website.
  • Oversee the creation of web pages for Catholic Medical's various locations.
  • Develop a comprehensive social media and content strategy to enhance visibility and engagement among diverse audiences.

Media Relations and Thought Leadership

  • Identify and develop strategies for managing reputational risks and communications.
  • Create key messages, talking points, and positioning statements; train senior leaders and staff on organizational messaging.
  • Lead the team in identifying opportunities for authoring white papers, book chapters, and other relevant publications.
  • Identify conferences and events where Catholic Medical leadership can present on the organization's initiatives and campaigns. Oversee the creation of promotional materials for these events.
  • Develop a proactive media strategy to promote the organization's initiatives and elevate the voices of stakeholders.
  • Build and nurture relationships with journalists to reach new audiences.
  • Collaborate with program experts and leadership to develop an advocacy communication strategy that aligns with the organization's mission.

Branding and Advertising

  • Refine the brand voice and ensure brand integrity across all platforms.
  • Lead and execute advertising campaigns, including digital promotions, to enhance brand awareness and track their effectiveness.
  • Create and distribute brand materials to staff and volunteers globally.

Team Management

  • Recruit, develop, and retain talent within the communications team.
  • Supervise direct reports, interns, and volunteers as necessary.
  • Communicate organizational priorities and strategic direction effectively to ensure team engagement.
  • Assess and enhance departmental processes to maximize staff efficiency.
  • Develop evaluation plans to measure the impact of departmental initiatives and inform future strategies.
  • Provide guidance and feedback to ensure departmental goals are achieved.
  • Select and manage external agencies and vendors.
  • Develop and oversee the budget to support departmental objectives.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • Over 10 years of comprehensive experience in branding and communications, ideally within an international non-profit context.
  • A minimum of 3 years in progressive leadership and management roles is required.
  • Strong project management, interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience in developing and executing communication strategies.
  • A passion for storytelling.
  • Practical knowledge of content management systems, graphic design tools, and social media monitoring.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to translate strategies into actionable plans.
  • A collaborative approach, committed to working with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Self-motivated and entrepreneurial, with a penchant for initiating new projects.
  • Willingness to travel locally and internationally as needed.
  • Comfortable working within a faith-based organization.
  • Valid authorization to work in the United States.
