Clinical Education Specialist

The Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Specialist operates in various capacities including educator, change agent, consultant, evidence-based practitioner, and leader.
The NPD Specialist is tasked with the assessment, planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs aimed at enhancing the performance of associates, fostering professional growth, and supporting the mission, vision, and core values of MedStar Health and the Nursing Department.
- Education: A Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required; a Master's degree in Nursing, Health Care, or Business Administration is preferred.
- Experience: 3-4 years of progressively responsible experience in a related field is required; experience in teaching or professional development is preferred.
- Licenses and Certifications: Must possess a Registered Nurse (RN) license and state licensure in the District of Columbia. Certification in a clinical specialty from a nationally recognized nursing organization is required within one year, along with Nursing Professional Development certification within 36 months of hire. CPR certification for healthcare providers is also required.
- Exhibits clinical expertise, leadership, and communication skills essential for developing educational programs that achieve optimal outcomes.
- Designs, implements, and evaluates educational initiatives and consultative services.
- Utilizes teaching techniques that encourage critical thinking and evidence-based practice, incorporating adult learning principles.
- Facilitates the onboarding and orientation of new associates, ensuring a smooth transition into the practice environment while meeting competency assessment standards.
Identifies and evaluates learning needs and skill gaps requiring remediation, collaborating with unit leaders to promote critical thinking and effective patient care.
- Develops educational plans, coordinates resources, evaluates responses to training, and follows up with associates transitioning to new clinical roles.
- Plans educational offerings for nursing associates, considering mandatory regulatory requirements, quality and safety, performance improvement, and clinical advancement.
- Provides continuing education activities to enhance knowledge and maintain certification.
- Conducts educational sessions that inform and facilitate the adoption of new procedures, technologies, and patient care trends.
- Offers expertise in competency development and assessment across the nursing department.
- Regularly conducts competency validation programs for nursing associates.
- Engages in committees related to learning programs and collaborates with internal and external experts to develop relevant educational initiatives.
- Acts as a liaison with academic partners and oversees clinical student placements.
- Participates in research activities or collaborates with others in such efforts.
