Position Overview

This full-time position involves significant engagement with the management and preservation of collections, particularly those related to Africa. The selected candidate will play a crucial role in the deinstallation of existing exhibitions and contribute to the development of a new Africa-focused exhibition. Responsibilities include supporting the care and management of collections, as well as digitizing and cataloging artifacts to enhance accessibility for researchers, cultural communities, and the general public.

The role also entails collaboration with conservation staff and anthropology collections management to ensure proper handling, tracking, and storage of artifacts. The assistant will participate in research initiatives and assist with community engagement activities related to the exhibitions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the deinstallation and relocation of collections from current exhibitions, facilitating their transition into a new display space.
  • Handle and digitally document a selection of African artifacts, ensuring accurate processing and cataloging of images.
  • Support the organization and inventory management of anthropology collections, adhering to best practices for safe handling and storage.
  • Conduct inventory assessments and assist in reintegrating de-installed items back into storage.
  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory database, collaborating with collections managers to resolve cataloging discrepancies.
  • Facilitate visits from researchers and community representatives, documenting insights and traditional knowledge as appropriate.
  • Enhance storage conditions for anthropology collections through preventive conservation measures and monitor environmental conditions.
  • Respond to inquiries from various stakeholders, including curators and the public, regarding collections and exhibitions.
  • Engage in community outreach and heritage management initiatives, potentially outside of regular working hours.
  • Monitor collections for deterioration risks and participate in preventive care activities, including inspections and routine cleaning.
  • Supervise volunteers and interns as necessary, ensuring effective engagement with the collections.
  • Perform additional tasks related to collections management as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, African Studies, or Museum Studies.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in museum collections management.
  • Proficiency in museum collection photography and post-production editing.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and moving items.
  • Capability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Experience with databases and museum cataloging standards is essential.
  • Familiarity with material culture from Africa and engagement with descendant communities is highly valued.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with diverse audiences.
  • Willingness to adhere to established procedures and guidelines.
  • In-depth knowledge of museum collections care practices is expected.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe software, and collections management databases is necessary.
