The Art Institute of Chicago is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Graduate Assistant to support the Black Metropolis Research Consortium (BMRC) in its research and collections efforts. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in collections management, art history, and Chicago and Midwest history, art, design, and architecture.
Key Responsibilities- Develop a research guide for Black Chicago-area architects and designers to inform collection development and create a roadmap for future projects.
- Organize convenings to examine key figures, themes, and conceptual frameworks for this research and consider the legacies of historical work on contemporary architects, designers, and artists in the city.
- Create a framework for collecting oral histories, including developing a list of possible interviewees, exploring methodologies, and consulting specialists across disciplinary perspectives.
- Engage with BMRC member institutions, other institutions, architects, designers, and scholars working on these topics and participate in programs with other emerging scholars and museum staff.
- Strong interest in collections management and art history.
- Detail-oriented mindset and demonstrated organizational skills.
- Demonstrated capacity for analytical work.
- Some knowledge of art and an interest in Chicago and Midwest history, art, design, and architecture.
- Experience conducting research in archives or special collections.
The BMGA will anticipate travel to Chicago-area collections and will have periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. They must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time and will often operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
