Position Overview

The Director of Marketing and Communications plays a pivotal role in shaping the marketing and communication strategies for the International African American Museum. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, this position is tasked with the comprehensive planning, development, and execution of marketing and public relations activities, both for external and internal audiences.

The successful candidate will establish a strategic vision that aligns with the museum's overarching brand and marketing objectives, ensuring a focus on key areas such as general admission, special exhibitions, educational programming, and membership growth. As a vital member of the senior leadership team, the Director will lead the museum's marketing and communications efforts, requiring a blend of strategic insight, creative thinking, and data-driven decision-making.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement a robust marketing and communications strategy that resonates with targeted audiences, in line with institutional priorities.
  2. Oversee the management of brand identity and ensure the mission is effectively communicated.
  3. Drive revenue generation through strategic marketing initiatives, aiming for significant ticket sales and attendance.
  4. Design and execute campaigns aimed at acquiring and renewing Museum Members and Donors, as well as promoting special programs and exhibitions.
  5. Craft communication strategies tailored for various stakeholders, including donors, members, and visitors.
  6. Contribute to long-term audience development strategies through effective planning and execution.
  7. Conduct market research and stakeholder surveys to enhance audience engagement and broaden the museum's reach.
  8. Lead a team of three professionals, including a Social Media Manager, Media Relations Manager, and Marketing and Communications Manager.
  9. Manage external marketing support, ensuring alignment with the museum's strategic goals.
  10. Coordinate media relations efforts to enhance the museum's visibility and reputation.
  11. Utilize various marketing channels to maximize the museum's outreach and engagement.
  12. Collaborate on institutional projects, including special events and initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion.

Qualifications:

Education: A Bachelor's degree in marketing, public relations, communications, or a related field is required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of seven years in marketing and communications at an organizational level.
  • Proven experience in consumer marketing, including brand and event campaign management.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets and oversee contracted personnel.
  • Significant supervisory experience is essential.
  • Experience in public relations and corporate communications is preferred.
