The Senior Director of Marketing and Communications is a pivotal role that reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer. This position is accountable for the strategic planning, development, and execution of comprehensive marketing and communication initiatives for the International African American Museum. The incumbent will lead a team responsible for marketing, communications, visitor engagement, group tourism, sales, and graphic design, while collaborating closely with various departments within the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a robust marketing, communications, and public relations strategy that aligns with institutional goals and targets diverse audiences.
- Oversee brand management and ensure the mission is effectively communicated.
- Drive revenue generation through ticket sales, programs, retail, and café operations, with a target of $3.7 million in revenue.
- Design and execute campaigns aimed at acquiring and renewing Museum Members and Donors, as well as promoting special exhibitions and programs.
- Craft communication strategies for various stakeholders, including donors, members, and visitors.
- Contribute to the long-term audience development strategy in alignment with the institutional strategic plan.
- Conduct market research and stakeholder surveys to enhance audience engagement and broaden the Museum's reach.
- Manage a team of three professionals: Social Media Manager/Coordinator, Media Relations Manager, and Marketing and Communications Manager.
- Supervise contracted marketing support staff and vendors to fulfill marketing objectives.
- Coordinate media relations efforts to enhance the Museum's visibility and manage media inquiries effectively.
- Formulate strategies for utilizing various marketing channels, including email and print, and collaborate with external agencies as necessary.
- Work collaboratively on institutional projects and initiatives, including special events and diversity initiatives.
Qualifications:
Education: A Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, communications, or a related field is required.
Experience:
- A minimum of seven years of experience in marketing and communications at an organizational level.
- Proven experience in direct consumer marketing, including brand and event campaign management.
- Demonstrated experience in budget management and oversight of contracted personnel or vendors.
- Significant supervisory and managerial experience (minimum of three years).
- Experience in public relations, crisis management, and corporate communications is essential.
Preferred Experience:
- Experience in the Arts and Culture sector is advantageous.
- Background in team-building and organizational design is a plus.
- Experience in marketing for mission-driven institutions or campaigns is beneficial.
Skills and Abilities:
- Exceptional strategic leadership and operational management skills, including budget and resource management.
- Proven track record in driving revenue and executing major marketing and public relations campaigns.
