Heavy Machinery Technician

Charleston County Government is seeking qualified Heavy Machinery Technicians to join our Fleet Operations team.
As a Heavy Machinery Technician, you will be tasked with the upkeep and repair of the County's extensive fleet of heavy machinery, including backhoes, loaders, motor graders, bulldozers, dump trucks, roll-off trucks, and ambulances.

Heavy Machinery Technicians are provided with an annual tool allowance.
This position remains open until filled, with application reviews commencing immediately.
Your responsibilities will include performing a variety of repair and maintenance tasks on County vehicles, specifically medium and heavy-duty trucks, vans, and ambulances in a field setting. You will diagnose and repair all electrical and electronic components and accessories across various types of equipment, including more complex services such as heating and air conditioning systems, brake and frame maintenance, suspension, tires, and related tasks. You will document identified issues and diagnose basic mechanical problems, replacing defective parts as necessary.
Key duties include:
- Engaging with vehicle operators to discuss issues and outline necessary repairs.
- Inspecting, testing, and repairing vehicle electrical systems, including alternators, regulators, and batteries.
- Prioritizing repairs to minimize disruption to County operations.
- Maintaining accurate records of maintenance activities.
- Providing on-call support for after-hours repairs on EMS ambulances.
- Keeping supervisors informed about work progress.
Continuous professional development is encouraged through attendance at meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions, as well as reviewing relevant publications and audiovisual materials to stay updated on best practices and new developments in the field.
The position requires a high school diploma (or GED) along with at least one year of extensive repair and maintenance experience with heavy machinery, heavy-duty truck systems, or mechanical systems. Certification from manufacturers for past training is preferred.
A valid driver's license is required, and the ability to obtain a valid CDL within six months of employment is necessary. Candidates must also obtain ASE or manufacturer certifications within twelve months of hire if they do not already possess acceptable certifications.
Employees must be capable of performing diagnostics using various diagnostic tools, proficient in using a digital multimeter, and able to read wiring diagrams. Road calls and operating repaired equipment may be required. Additionally, employees in this role will be expected to be on-call 24/7 for repairs to critical and emergency equipment as needed.
This position involves performing a comprehensive range of major and minor mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and fuel system repairs on various heavy machinery, heavy-duty trucks, and trailers, including related systems such as hydraulic attachments and refuse bodies.
