Devens, Massachusetts, United States Commonwealth Fusion Systems Full time
Position Overview

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is at the forefront of advancing commercial fusion energy, aiming to provide a sustainable and efficient energy solution for the future.

In collaboration with MIT, CFS harnesses decades of research alongside innovative high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. This cutting-edge technology is pivotal in constructing compact fusion power plants that are not only cost-effective but can also be built swiftly. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to achieve global decarbonization objectives as expeditiously as possible. To realize this vision, we are seeking committed individuals who foster a collaborative environment, enhance our operations through diverse perspectives, and possess a proven track record of excellence in their respective fields.

The role of the Fusion Systems Integration Engineer is crucial in implementing CFS's Systems Engineering methodologies and systems thinking to the plasma diagnostics utilized in the real-time management of SPARC. This position is inherently interdisciplinary, necessitating collaboration with a diverse array of stakeholders, both within CFS and with scientific teams globally, to ensure the successful design, integration, and operation of systems.

The SPARC Diagnostics Team comprises professionals from various backgrounds, collaborating with fusion community teams worldwide. This role will work closely with Responsible Officers and Engineers as a matrixed Systems Engineer, focusing on delivering SPARC-related work products, processes, and tools while respecting the relevant decision-making authorities and their scopes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design & Integration: Collaborate within established decision-making frameworks to conduct design and integration tasks, ensuring consistency across systems owned by multiple System Responsible Officers (SRO) and Responsible Engineers (RE).
  • Facilitation: Assist in the integration of on/in-tokamak systems, ensuring alignment with Tokamak Interfacing Systems Responsible Engineers.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination: Identify and address cross-functional challenges, develop tools, and coordinate efforts at the Ex-Vessel Integrated Product Team (IPT) meetings.
  • Interface Management: Maintain the connection between Tokamak CAD software (NX) and plant CAD software (AVEVA) through established workflows and tracking tools.
  • Subsystem Coordination: Define and manage plasma diagnostic system interfaces with other tokamak and plant systems, ensuring seamless integration.
  • Impact Assessment: Conduct assessments for changes affecting the technical baseline of plasma diagnostics, addressing scope, schedule, cost, and performance impacts.
  • Design Review Support: Contribute to the development of design review content and evaluate other design reviews for technical accuracy and maturity.
  • Risk Assessment: Perform safety-focused risk assessments on plasma diagnostic subsystems, utilizing failure modes analysis and ensuring the implementation of risk mitigation strategies.
  • Standard Development: Where applicable, create standard design guidelines to promote a consistent approach in SPARC systems development.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • 4+ years of experience in Systems Engineering or related fields with a Bachelor's Degree, or 2+ years with a Master's Degree.
  • In-depth understanding of Systems Engineering life cycle processes and their practical application in fast-paced projects.
  • Experience in developing large, integrated, and complex systems across various industries such as energy, aerospace, and defense.
  • General knowledge of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and control concepts, with a willingness to learn new technical areas.
  • Strong interpersonal and technical communication skills, with the ability to engage proactively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Experience in environments requiring creative problem-solving with multiple stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with Teamcenter / NX (or similar PLM solutions) for managing integrated design solutions.
Additional Skills:
  • Knowledge in areas such as high and ultra-high vacuum, materials science, and electrical insulation design for high voltage applications.
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering, particularly using SysML-based tools.
  • Physical capability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs and perform various physical activities.
  • Willingness to work in environments with industrial hazards and to travel as necessary.
CFS values diversity and is an equal opportunity employer. We consider all qualified applicants for employment without discrimination based on race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law, ordinance, or regulation.
