Devens, Massachusetts, United States Commonwealth Fusion Systems Full time
Position Overview

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is at the forefront of advancing commercial fusion energy solutions. Our collaboration with MIT harnesses decades of research and innovative high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology, paving the way for compact fusion power facilities that can be developed swiftly and economically. Our mission is to deploy these facilities to achieve global decarbonization objectives promptly. To realize this vision, CFS has gathered a team of leaders in advanced technology, fusion science, and manufacturing, all with a proven track record of rapid execution. Backed by leading global investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver sustainable, clean fusion energy to combat climate change. We are seeking dedicated individuals who value collaboration, enhance our work with diverse perspectives, and possess the skills and experience relevant to this role.

CFS is currently in search of a Lead Systems Architect, who will concentrate on the execution of Systems Engineering processes and systems thinking for the subsystems integral to the SPARC & ARC tokamaks. This role is inherently interdisciplinary and will necessitate collaboration with a diverse array of stakeholders to ensure successful design, integration, and operation of systems. The Lead Systems Architect will be aligned with a group of subsystems, engaging in activities throughout the development lifecycle, including requirements formulation, interface specification, trade analysis, risk evaluation and management, operational concept/control architecture development, and test planning.

The ideal candidate for this position is eager to learn about various technical subjects and proactively apply that knowledge to ensure the successful development and implementation of tokamak systems, validating the current SPARC mission and future ARC initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Gather, decompose, and establish traceability of system requirements within the IBM DOORS Next Gen database.
  • Coordinate, define, and manage interfaces between tokamak systems and interfacing systems.
  • Conduct trade studies to facilitate technical decision-making, presenting proposals for decision closures to the appropriate management level.
  • Perform risk assessments on tokamak systems utilizing failure modes analysis software and methodologies, ensuring the development and implementation of risk mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee changes impacting the technical baseline of tokamak systems regarding scope, schedule, cost, performance, or interfacing systems.
  • Assist in the development of design review content and evaluate other design reviews for technical maturity, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Create test plans and document evidence for requirements verification and validation.
  • Develop requirement/risk-informed testing and commissioning strategies.
  • Generate and manage model-based systems engineering artifacts for multiple CFS programs using Cameo Enterprise Architecture.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • 8+ years of experience in Systems Engineering or related roles with a Bachelor's Degree, or 6+ years with a Master's Degree.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Systems Engineering lifecycle processes and their practical application in fast-paced projects.
  • Experience in the development of large, integrated, and complex systems, preferably in fusion, energy, aerospace, defense, or transportation sectors.
  • General knowledge of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation & control, and industrial concepts, with the ability to learn and apply new technical concepts.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of electromechanical systems and broader mechanical and electrical engineering principles.
  • Excellent interpersonal and technical communication skills, with the ability to engage proactively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Experience in environments requiring creative, proactive problem-solving with diverse stakeholders.
Preferred Experience:
  • Prior involvement in the development of superconducting magnet-based systems.
  • Hands-on integration and testing experience utilizing Verification & Validation lifecycle methodologies.
  • General knowledge of tokamak and fusion plant engineering principles.
  • Familiarity with high and ultra-high vacuum systems, materials science, electrical insulation design for high voltage applications, and thermo-structural analysis techniques.
  • Experience with multi-objective design optimization techniques applied to the architectural design of complex systems.
  • Model-Based Systems Engineering experience, particularly with SysML-based tools.
  • Experience in technology roadmapping and development for pioneering systems and programs.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs and perform activities such as typing, standing, and sitting for extended periods.
  • Commitment to safety in mitigating industrial hazards, including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work nights/weekends/on-call to support off-site testing.
CFS team members excel in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and have consistently demonstrated exceptional results across various endeavors. We align closely with our core values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-critique. As we expand, we are eager to welcome talented individuals who are mission-driven and bring diverse perspectives and innovative problem-solving approaches.

At CFS, we highly value diversity and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We consider all qualified applicants equally for employment and do not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, ancestry, citizenship status, protected veteran status, religion, physical or mental disability, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or any other basis protected by law, ordinance, or regulation.
