Devens, Massachusetts, United States Commonwealth Fusion Systems Full time
Company Overview:
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is at the forefront of developing the most efficient and cost-effective pathway to commercial fusion energy. By partnering with MIT, we harness decades of research alongside innovative high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. Our goal is to create compact fusion power plants that can be built swiftly and economically, contributing to global decarbonization efforts.

Mission:
Our mission is to deploy fusion power plants rapidly to address climate change challenges. CFS has gathered a team of experts in advanced technology, fusion science, and manufacturing, all with a proven history of swift execution.

Role Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated individual to join our team, someone who values collaboration, enhances our operations with diverse perspectives, and possesses a strong track record of achieving exceptional results. The Senior Manufacturing Engineer will play a pivotal role in overseeing and enhancing the manufacturing process for magnet components and assemblies, guiding the transition from development to full-scale production.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead a team of manufacturing engineers focused on the development of manufacturing processes.
  • Organize project timelines and milestones to align with strategic objectives.
  • Communicate project updates, risks, and resource needs to both the team and leadership.
  • Oversee the process development for the manufacturing line of HTS magnets, from initial low-volume research and development to full-scale production.
  • Develop and validate manufacturing techniques, processes, flow diagrams, and work instructions for superconducting magnet components and assemblies.
  • Identify and resolve manufacturing discrepancies, emphasizing continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with external vendors and suppliers to ensure timely hardware delivery in accordance with production schedules.
  • Establish and implement plans for future factory expansion, including capital equipment and facility layouts.
  • Apply DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and PFMEA (Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) methodologies, along with statistical process controls, to create a reliable, low-defect manufacturing line.
  • Influence decisions regarding in-house versus outsourced manufacturing and work with external partners to enhance internal capabilities.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline is required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience as a manufacturing engineer with complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Experience in transitioning products from research and development to production, including the development of manufacturing techniques for automation.
  • Project management experience collaborating with internal stakeholders and external vendors to deliver manufactured products within set timelines and budgets.
  • Proficiency in writing work instructions, material planning, process mapping, and capacity modeling.
  • High self-motivation and a strong drive for quick execution, coupled with excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Experience:
  • 5+ years of experience as a manufacturing engineer with complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Experience in a leadership role or as a technical group lead.
  • Familiarity with magnets, thermo-mechanical assemblies, machining, welding, and/or vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) is advantageous.
  • Experience with Lean and/or Six Sigma methodologies.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs and perform tasks such as stooping, typing, standing, and sitting for extended periods. A commitment to safety is essential to mitigate potential industrial hazards.

Company Culture:
CFS team members excel in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and have consistently demonstrated outstanding results across various endeavors. We uphold our core values of integrity, execution, impact, and self-reflection. As we expand, we are eager to welcome talented individuals who are mission-driven and bring diverse perspectives to our team.
