About Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS)
CFS is at the forefront of developing commercial fusion energy, collaborating with MIT to harness decades of research and pioneering high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. Our goal is to create compact fusion power plants that can be built swiftly and economically, supporting global decarbonization efforts.
Role Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Health Physicist to join our Radiation Protection Team, which is committed to ensuring the radiological safety of our employees, the public, the environment, and property. This position requires expertise in x-ray safety, non-ionizing radiation safety, and operational health physics within a radioactive materials license framework.
Key Responsibilities
The Health Physicist will:
- Oversee X-Ray and RF Safety programs while supporting Laser and EMF Safety initiatives.
- Gain a thorough understanding of RF and EMF safety through comprehensive training.
- Conduct regular inspections and audits of equipment and practices to ensure compliance with safety guidelines and regulations.
- Develop and implement necessary safety protocols.
- Collaborate with the EHS team on the safe application of lasers in manufacturing and R&D environments.
- Create and deliver extensive training on ionizing and non-ionizing radiation safety.
- Prepare supplementary training materials, including manuals and guidance documents.
- Work with department heads to integrate safety considerations into new equipment and procedures.
- Maintain detailed records of inspections, audits, and training activities.
- Report safety metrics and incidents to management regularly.
- Ensure adherence to CFS and regulatory standards.
- Support the broader Radiation Protection team as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A Bachelor's or Graduate Degree in Health Physics, Physical Science, Engineering, or Biological Science.
- A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in health physics, including at least 1 year in applied health physics.
- Experience with radiation regulations, specifically 105 CMR 120/10 CFR 30 (or equivalent).
- Proficiency in various radiation monitoring techniques.
- Experience in writing procedures and technical documents.
- Knowledge of radiation control and safety practices.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a diverse environment.
Preferred Experience
Additional qualifications that would be advantageous include:
- Experience with Manufacturing / Industrial X-Ray, RF, EMF, and Laser Safety.
- Experience working under a broad scope license.
- Familiarity with the radiation facility lifecycle, including design and decommissioning.
- NRRPT or CHP certification is a plus.
Working Conditions
This role may require occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs and working in environments with industrial hazards. Candidates should be prepared for activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods, and may need to travel or work nights/weekends/on-call as necessary.
