Apex Engineering Group is seeking a Lead Engineer to join our dynamic Transportation Group in Detroit Lakes, MN. This role is pivotal in enhancing and expanding our Transportation services across the North and West Central regions of Minnesota. The selected candidate will engage in business development initiatives and oversee a team of engineers, technicians, and support personnel on various City, County, and MnDOT projects, guiding them from the initial planning stages through to design and construction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver professional engineering solutions for clients, including planning, design, specifications, plans, reports, construction oversight, and project management.
  • Maintain consistent and effective communication with supervisors and project team members, providing regular updates and progress reports throughout all project phases.
  • Participate actively in company, project, and client meetings.
  • Contribute to proposal preparation and engage in interviews to secure work for the firm, with increasing responsibilities in business development as experience grows.
  • Exhibit initiative and sound judgment in independent decision-making.
  • Guide and collaborate with engineering technicians and team members in developing project plans and specifications.
  • Adhere to the company employee handbook and safety policies.
  • Conduct responsibilities with a strong commitment to ethical practices and attention to detail.
  • Work effectively both independently and within a team environment.
  • Engage in professional organizations and community leadership initiatives.
  • Be prepared for occasional travel and out-of-town assignments.
  • Work hours may vary between 40-50 hours per week, with the possibility of exceeding 50 hours on occasion.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering is required.
  • Professional Engineer License is preferred or the ability to obtain licensure within 6-12 months in Minnesota.
  • 5-15 years of experience in Civil Engineering, specifically in transportation projects.
  • Experience as a consultant or with a state agency on MnDOT, State-Aid, or County-Aid projects in Minnesota is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with MnDOT Prequalification submissions is a plus.
  • Strong project management capabilities are essential for this role.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are mandatory.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, with strong interpersonal and organizational abilities.
  • Adaptable working style with a willingness to adjust personal schedules to meet project deadlines and client needs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows/Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • A valid driver's license is required or the ability to obtain one.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit and operate a computer in a standard office environment.
  • Occasional visits to project sites in outdoor conditions during construction season may be necessary.
  • Must fulfill scheduled work hours.
  • Ability to lift objects or containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
