Position Overview

Location: Detroit Lakes, MN

Apex Engineering Group is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Lead Engineer within our Transportation Division. This position is essential for the ongoing enhancement and growth of our transportation services in the North and West Central regions of Minnesota. The selected candidate will be responsible for spearheading business development initiatives and overseeing a team of engineers, technicians, and support personnel on various municipal, county, and state projects from inception through to completion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive engineering solutions for clients, including planning, design, specifications, reports, construction oversight, and project management.
  • Maintain regular and effective communication with supervisors and project teams, providing updates throughout all project phases.
  • Participate actively in company, project, and client meetings.
  • Contribute to proposal preparation and engage in interviews to secure new projects, with increasing responsibilities in business development as experience grows.
  • Exhibit independent thinking and sound judgment in decision-making processes.
  • Guide and collaborate with engineering technicians and team members in the development of project plans and specifications.
  • Adhere to company policies and safety regulations as outlined in the employee handbook.
  • Execute responsibilities with a high degree of professionalism, legality, and ethical standards, paying close attention to detail.
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Engage in professional organizations and community leadership initiatives.
  • Be prepared for occasional travel and overnight stays as required.
  • Work hours may vary, typically ranging from 40 to 50 hours per week, with potential for occasional extended hours.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering is mandatory.
  • Professional Engineer License is preferred or the ability to obtain licensure within 6-12 months in Minnesota.
  • 5-15 years of experience in civil engineering, specifically in transportation projects.
  • Experience with consulting or working for state agencies on MnDOT, State-Aid, or County-Aid projects in Minnesota is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with MnDOT Prequalification submissions is a plus.
  • Strong project management skills are crucial for this role.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities are essential.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, with strong interpersonal and organizational capabilities.
  • Adaptable working style with a willingness to adjust schedules to meet project deadlines and client needs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows/Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • A valid driver's license is required or the ability to obtain one.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit and work on a computer in a standard office environment.
  • Occasional visits to project sites in outdoor conditions during construction seasons may be necessary.
  • Must adhere to scheduled work hours.
  • Ability to lift objects or containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
