PERSONAL CARE ASSISTANT (PCA)

Per Diem, Weekends

Position Overview:

  • Provides assistance to residents with bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, and activities of daily living (ADLs) as required during the shift.
  • Changes bed linens according to the bathing schedule and/or as needed.
  • Records vital signs in accordance with policy and/or as instructed.
  • Supports Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) with necessary tasks.
  • Turns residents in bed following facility guidelines.
  • Repositions residents when out of bed according to facility protocols.
  • Assists with oral hygiene, including denture care, during morning routines, after meals, at bedtime, and as necessary.
  • Responds promptly to call bells in compliance with facility policy.
  • Completes patient care documentation at the end of each shift, including accurate intake and output records.
  • At the end of the month, prepares Patient Observation Records and Activity Attendance Records for the upcoming month.
  • Collects urine or stool specimens as directed.
  • Administers enemas as instructed.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of patient units and hallways.
  • Ensures bedside tables, chests of drawers, and closets are kept tidy and organized.
  • Cleans and cares for nursing equipment (e.g., blood pressure monitors, thermometers).
  • Adheres to restraint policies, including proper release procedures.
  • Provides post-mortem care when necessary.
  • Ensures residents have fresh ice water by refilling pitchers with ice and/or water at least once per shift.
  • Cleans water pitchers, cups, bedpans, and urinals according to schedules.
  • Rinses soiled personal clothing and linens before placing them in the appropriate laundry containers.
  • Assists residents with bedpans or urinals.
  • Empties catheter bags at the end of the shift and records output accurately.
  • Assists with rehabilitation programs such as bowel and bladder retraining, grooming, etc., while documenting on the Rehabilitation sheet every shift.
  • Assists charge nurses with resident needs and treatments as directed.
  • Maintains a clean towel and washcloth for each patient in bathrooms at all times, replacing them immediately when used.
  • Empties incontinent pad barrels and linen containers every shift and replaces plastic bags in containers.
  • Reports to oncoming CNAs at the end of the shift.
  • Understands and agrees to follow the policy of no transfers until certified, and seeks assistance from a CNA for tasks they are not comfortable or trained to perform, including all transfers.

Position Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have completed a NA1 training program and passed the state test within four months of completion.
  • Must be willing to care for geriatric patients and demonstrate genuine concern for their well-being.
  • Must be receptive to receiving, understanding, and following instructions.
  • Must work collaboratively with nursing staff, other departments, families, and visitors.
  • Must treat patients, staff, and visitors with kindness and respect.
  • Must operate equipment safely and economically, ensuring the safety of self and others.
  • Must wear the approved uniform and maintain a neat appearance and good personal hygiene.
  • Must be familiar with and adhere to personnel, department, and facility policies and procedures.
  • Must participate in in-service training and other required staff meetings.
