PERSONAL CARE ASSISTANT (PCA)

Per Diem, Weekends

Position Overview:

  • Provides assistance to residents with bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, and activities of daily living (ADLs) as required during the shift.
  • Changes bed linens according to the bathing schedule and/or as needed.
  • Records vital signs in accordance with established policies and directives.
  • Supports Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) with necessary tasks.
  • Ensures residents are turned while in bed following facility protocols.
  • Repositions residents while out of bed as per facility guidelines.
  • Assists with oral hygiene, including denture care, at various times throughout the day.
  • Responds promptly to call bells in line with facility policy.
  • Completes patient care documentation at the end of each shift, including accurate intake and output records.
  • At the month's end, prepares Patient Observation Records and Activity Attendance Records for the upcoming month.
  • Collects urine or stool samples as instructed.
  • Administers enemas as directed.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of patient units and hallways.
  • Ensures bedside tables, dressers, and closets are tidy and organized.
  • Cleans and cares for nursing equipment, including blood pressure monitors and thermometers.
  • Adheres to restraint policies, including proper release procedures.
  • Assists with post-mortem care when necessary.
  • Ensures residents have access to fresh ice water by refilling pitchers regularly.
  • Cleans water pitchers, cups, and bedpans according to established schedules.
  • Rinses soiled personal clothing and linens before placing them in the appropriate laundry containers.
  • Assists residents with bedpans or urinals as needed.
  • Empties catheter bags at the end of the shift and records output accurately.
  • Supports rehabilitation programs such as bowel and bladder retraining and grooming, documenting progress on the Rehabilitation sheet each shift.
  • Assists charge nurses with resident needs and treatments as directed.
  • Maintains a supply of clean towels and washcloths for each patient in bathrooms at all times.
  • Empties incontinent pad barrels and linen containers every shift, replacing plastic bags as needed.
  • Provides a report at the end of the shift to the incoming CNA staff.
  • Understands and agrees to follow the policy of no transfers until certified, seeking assistance from a CNA for tasks they are not trained to perform.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a NA1 training program is required, along with passing the state test within four months of completion.
  • Must demonstrate a willingness to care for geriatric patients and show genuine concern for their well-being.
  • Must be receptive to receiving, understanding, and following instructions.
  • Must work collaboratively with nursing staff, other departments, families, and visitors.
  • Must exhibit kindness and respect towards patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Must operate equipment safely and use supplies efficiently.
  • Required to wear an approved uniform and maintain a neat appearance and good personal hygiene.
  • Must be familiar with and adhere to personnel, department, and facility policies and procedures.
  • Participation in in-service training and staff meetings is mandatory.
