POSITION SUMMARY

This role involves delivering language services to assist clients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) in navigating court services during various proceedings, whether in-person, virtually, or via telephone. The position entails interpreting or coordinating interpreting services through independent contractors. State or Federal Interpreter Certification or its equivalent is required.

IMPORTANT NOTE

The ideal candidate must exhibit proficiency in both languages, including a strong grasp of grammar, dialects, and legal terminology pertinent to judicial processes. The court interpreter is tasked with executing all forms of interpretation from the source language to the target language during court sessions and for court-mandated services. Preference will be given to applicants holding State or Federal Interpreter Certification or equivalent, alongside relevant court interpreting experience.

SALARY CONSIDERATIONS

Compensation will be determined based on various factors, including relevant experience and adherence to the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, in alignment with our compensation structure. Candidates are encouraged to include any pertinent experience for consideration. A complete judicial application, along with a cover letter and resume, is required for evaluation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

To excel in this role, the individual must competently perform the following essential functions:

  1. Provide precise, comprehensive, and clear interpretation in all hearings involving parties with limited English proficiency requiring interpretation services.
  2. Coordinate the scheduling of interpreters for languages beyond Spanish, including American Sign Language interpreters and real-time captioning services for various court-related activities.
  3. Authorize payments for independent contractors.
  4. Assist in the preparation and organization of dockets for independent contractors.
  5. Process requests for document translation for specific district programs and liaise with the Translation Department of the Office of Language Access to ensure timely delivery.
  6. Translate brief documents, such as correspondence from defendants to judges, victim statements, and informational flyers for the district.
  7. Participate in required meetings and training sessions.
  8. Perform additional duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position may involve providing guidance and oversight to other employees, ensuring quality of work, training, and assignment of tasks. The majority of tasks performed by employees in this role are semi-complex.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Comprehensive, practical knowledge of work processes is essential. The incumbent should be capable of executing a wide range of tasks, including complex ones, with minimal supervision. The impact of this role on the organization is significant.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: An Associate's degree or two years of college education is required. Alternatively, relevant work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required formal education.

Work Experience: A minimum of 1 to 3 years of experience in interpreting within a judicial context is necessary.

Licenses and Certifications: State or Federal Court Interpreter Certification or equivalent is mandatory.

PHYSICAL EFFORT REQUIREMENTS

This position is classified as sedentary work, requiring the ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, with minimal physical activity required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is generally pleasant, with minimal exposure to unpleasant conditions or hazards.
