STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Overview of Job Classification:
This role involves delivering language services to assist clients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) in navigating court services during various proceedings, whether in-person, virtually, or via telephone. The position entails interpreting or coordinating interpreting services through independent contractors. State or Federal Interpreter Certification or an equivalent qualification is required.

IMPORTANT:

The ideal candidate will possess a strong command of both languages, including grammar, dialects, and legal terminology relevant to judicial processes. The court interpreter is tasked with executing all forms of interpretation from the source language to the target language during court proceedings and for court-mandated services. Preference will be given to candidates holding State or Federal Interpreter Certification or equivalent, along with experience in a judicial context.

Salary offers will be determined based on various factors, including relevant experience, budget availability, and adherence to the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, in line with our compensation structure. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

To succeed in this role, an individual must effectively perform the essential functions outlined below. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to fulfill these essential functions. The frequency and percentage of time may vary based on assignment.

1. Provide precise, comprehensive, and clear interpretation in all types of hearings where a party requires a Spanish interpreter due to limited English proficiency.

2. Coordinate scheduling of interpreters for languages other than Spanish, including American Sign Language interpreters and real-time captioning providers, for court appearances, competency evaluations, pre-sentence reports, mediations, and court visits.

3. Authorize payments for independent contractors.

4. Assist in the preparation, organization, and distribution of the docket to independent contractors.

5. Process requests for document translation for specific district programs, liaising with the Translation Department of the Office of Language Access to ensure timely delivery.

6. Translate brief documents such as letters from defendants to judges, victim statements, and informational flyers for the district.

7. Attend required meetings and training sessions.

8. Perform additional duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position may involve providing guidance and oversight to another employee, including quality control, training, and assignment of work. The majority of tasks performed by employees in this role are semi-complex.

HUMAN COLLABORATION:
Interactions may influence policy implementation and involve support for sensitive issues or negotiations. Contact may include challenging interactions with the public, necessitating high levels of tact and the ability to manage aggressive interpersonal dynamics. The impact of these interactions is limited.

Receives General Direction:
Employees typically execute their duties by adhering to established standard operating procedures and/or policies, with discretion in selecting the appropriate procedures or policies to apply. Performance is reviewed periodically, and the impact of actions is moderate.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Full Performance:
This role requires comprehensive, practical knowledge of work processes, enabling the incumbent to complete a wide range of tasks, some of which may be complex, with minimal supervision. The potential impact on the organization is significant.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:
This position does not carry fiscal responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Equivalency:
An Associate's degree or two years of college education.

OR

Additional relevant work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required formal education.

Work Related Experience:
1 to 3 years of experience interpreting in a judicial environment.

Licenses and Certifications:
State or Federal Court Interpreter Certification or equivalent.

PHYSICAL EFFORT REQUIREMENTS:
Sedentary work involving exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, with minimal force frequently, and/or constant movement of objects, including the human body. Sedentary roles primarily involve sitting.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Generally favorable, with minimal exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards.

WORK LOCATION:
Office or similar indoor setting.

EXPOSURES:
Individuals who may be hostile or irate; individuals with known violent backgrounds.
