STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Overview of Job Classification:
This role encompasses advanced case management responsibilities for Probation Officers, including investigation, assessment, supervision, resource coordination, and monitoring of clients mandated by the court for services. The position aims to facilitate enduring behavioral changes in clients through various evidence-based methodologies to reduce recidivism, promote victim restitution, and ensure community safety. The role requires collaboration and communication with all parties involved in the probation process, including courts, attorneys, treatment providers, community resources, and other stakeholders. Additionally, this position involves mentoring and training less experienced officers and may oversee the work of volunteers or interns. Participation in statewide committees may also be required.

This position is part of a progressive job series, and placement will be determined based on the qualifications and relevant experience of the successful candidate.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conduct case management duties, including documenting client-related activities, reviewing client documents and court orders, and managing the client's electronic file.
  • Facilitate face-to-face appointments and interviews. Conduct ongoing assessments to identify treatment needs and risks to the community. Develop suitable case plans to guide supervision and ensure compliance with court-imposed conditions.
  • Evaluate, prioritize, and respond to critical incidents and potential risks in both field and office settings. De-escalate situations involving hostile or agitated clients.
  • Prepare various reports to evaluate criminal behavior and provide pertinent information and sentencing options to the court.
  • Submit comprehensive compliance reports to the court, including revocation documents, ensuring the protection of confidential information. Update the court as necessary and provide professional testimony.
  • Attend meetings with external agencies, such as family engagement and community supervision team meetings, to assist in monitoring offenders.
  • Inform staff, stakeholders, and the public about Victim Rights Amendment. Address community feedback regarding clients and probationers. Collect victim statements for various court proceedings and collaborate with other judicial districts on victim-related concerns.
  • Engage in professional development and training opportunities. Collaborate with others in focus groups, work groups, or committees aimed at advancing initiatives at local and state levels.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This role requires managing and monitoring the performance of multiple groups of employees across various business functions within an organizational unit, including making final decisions on hiring and disciplinary actions, evaluating program objectives and effectiveness, and realigning work and staffing assignments as necessary. The work performed by the majority of employees is complex.

HUMAN COLLABORATION:
Interactions may lead to decisions regarding policy implementation. Contact may involve supporting controversial positions or negotiating sensitive issues. Interactions may include stressful or negative engagements with the public, necessitating high levels of tact and the ability to manage aggressive interpersonal interactions. These interactions have significant implications.

Receives Limited Direction
Employees typically perform assignments using their judgment, seeking supervisory assistance only when necessary. Special projects are managed with minimal oversight, and assignments may be reviewed upon completion. Performance is reviewed periodically, and the impact of actions is significant.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Advanced: This role requires advanced skills and extensive knowledge of the work. The incumbent can manage complex tasks and navigate intricate nuances related to job aspects. Recognized by others within the organization for technical depth of knowledge, the likely impact on the organization is standard.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:
May assist in gathering data to support recommendations for budget allocations within the functional area. May monitor division or program-level budgets and expenditures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Equivalency:
Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, Human Services, or a related field.

OR

Additional work experience in these or other related fields may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required formal education.

Work Related Experience:
2 to 5 years of experience in criminal justice, law enforcement, social work, psychology, or a similar field.

Licenses and Certifications:
Successful completion of required academies and training.

Physical Effort Requirements:
Medium Work - Exerting up to 35 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment:
Disagreeable - Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.

Work Location:
Office or similar indoor environment; jail environment.

Exposures:
Individuals who are hostile or irate; individuals with known violent backgrounds; communicable diseases; bodily fluids.
