The Division of Clinical Pathology at Montefiore Medical Center is dedicated to conducting laboratory analyses of blood, urine, and other bodily fluids to assist in diagnosing diseases and maintaining health. Our division employs cutting-edge technology and maintains advanced automated systems across multiple laboratory locations, serving a wide array of healthcare facilities.

The Pathology Laboratory Technician will be responsible for preparing histological slides for diagnostic evaluations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate tissue processors to create paraffin blocks and manage the filing of these blocks and slides.
  • Embed pathology specimens to ensure comprehensive layer visibility.
  • Utilize rotary microtomes to section pathology specimens.
  • Perform routine staining with Hematoxylin and Eosin to visualize tissue sections, as well as special stains (GMS, AFB, PAS) for identifying specific organisms or tissue elements.
  • Conduct enzyme histochemistry procedures.
  • Manage order entries and updates in the Laboratory Information System for billing special stains.
  • Label and sign out slides to guarantee accurate case distribution.
  • Utilize manual and automated cover slippers to prevent water or air bubbles.
  • Maintain high standards of quality control in all routine tasks.
  • Document equipment maintenance to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Prepare necessary solutions for accurate histological processing.
  • Process requests from pathology residents and attending physicians to ensure completion of work orders.
  • Assist in immunohistochemistry procedures for antigen identification.
  • File paraffin blocks and slides efficiently.
  • Perform additional departmental duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree in Medical Technology or Life Sciences is required.
  • A valid New York State Department of Education Certified Histological Laboratory Technician License or a limited permit is mandatory. Candidates must secure the limited permit within the initial probationary period for continued employment.
  • Experience in prioritizing tissue handling and troubleshooting technical procedures is essential.
  • Familiarity with equipment such as rotary microtomes, Laboratory Information Systems, scales, microwaves, pH meters, automated cover slippers, microscopes, embedding centers, tissue processors, water baths, cryoplates, and incubator ovens is required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of histopathology techniques and immunohistochemistry methods is necessary.

This position is situated within the Surgical Pathology lab. The working hours are from 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
